Time for an UPGRADE!!

What happens here

Once the rafter framework is complete and secure, large sheets of plywood or Oriented Strand Board (OSB) are installed over the rafters. This process, known as roof sheathing, creates a solid, continuous surface that will support the roofing materials (shingles, metal panels, etc.). Workers cut the sheets to fit, often leaving appropriate gaps for expansion, and nail or screw them securely to each rafter. The video briefly shows metal hurricane straps being used, which are critical for increasing resistance to wind uplift, especially at roof-to-wall or rafter-to-beam connections.

Goal: Cover the rafter framework with plywood/OSB sheets to create a solid roof deck and install hurricane straps for wind resistance.

Tools and materials

  • Chalk Line — Marking rafter lines on the sheathing for precise nailing
  • Circular Saw — Cutting plywood/OSB sheets to size and around penetrations
  • Measuring Tape — Accurate measurement of sheathing cuts
  • Nail Gun — Fastening sheathing to rafters
  • Plywood/OSB Sheets — Creating the solid roof deck (e.g., 1/2-inch, 5/8-inch, or 3/4-inch CDX plywood or OSB)
  • Roofing Nails/Screws — Securing the sheathing to the rafters
  • Safety Harness and Lifeline — Fall protection while working on the roof
