What happens here

After the drainage stone base has been properly laid and compacted, unroll and carefully place a layer of high-strength geotextile fabric over the entire area. The video shows this black fabric visible beneath the Eco-blocks. This fabric serves multiple critical functions: it acts as a separator, preventing the compacted drainage stone from migrating into the underlying subgrade soil, which could otherwise compromise the drainage system. It also provides additional stability to the base layers and helps maintain the integrity of the permeable system by preventing fine soil particles from clogging the aggregate. Ensure that all seams where pieces of fabric meet are overlapped by at least 12 inches (30 cm) to prevent soil intrusion, and secure the edges or seams with landscape staples or pins if necessary, especially on sloped areas.

Goal: Separate base layers and enhance drainage system integrity.

Tools and materials

  • Geotextile fabric — A permeable layer to separate the drainage stone from the subgrade soil
  • Landscape staples or pins — Securing the fabric, especially on slopes or at seams
  • Measuring tape — Ensuring correct overlap amounts at seams
  • Utility knife or scissors — Cutting the geotextile fabric to fit the driveway dimensions
