What happens here

This video captures a conversation between an electrician and his father about the practice of offering free estimates in the trades. The father shares his perspective on when he would provide a free estimate, emphasizing the difference between referrals and cold calls, and discusses how current economic conditions and the tendency for some to 'work for nothing' impact the industry. He advises caution against overextending oneself and providing free services that devalue one's work.

I think if you're slow, you have no work, you do a free estimate. I feel like they're wasting my time. No, no, man. These free estimates, they're hit or miss. What do you think? Well, we're in different times right now. Okay. So, I never really gave a free estimate for a stranger. Why? If it's a referral, then I'll give them a free estimate. Right. Okay. But if someone just calls me out of the blue and says, "Hey, I'm interested in this. I want to know how you got my name." Yeah. Are you just using me to get you another price to compete with another guy? Yeah. And now the problem is a lot of guys are really slow because of these tariffs. There's a little bit of a recession right now. People are kind of puckering down a little bit. They're holding in. They're not buying new vehicles. But you got to be very careful because there's a lot of guys that work for nothing. They'll literally work and they lose money. Well, because they got guys, they've got insurance payments, they've got mortgage payments, rent payments. They've overextended themselves in the good times. And then when it starts to go bad, now they're like worried about how they're going to feed their guys, right? Long story short is you do a free estimate if you're very slow. Okay.
