here we go ready to rock and roll we'll hit the YouTube live thing in a minute that or that's the Facebook live so here we go tonight we're live on YouTube and we're going to see I can't see myself well if you want to see yourself you're right there you just want to look straight at the camera you're that's not the camera the camera is right here yeah you don't want to look to look at the camera to see if Facebook live Works last time it didn't work but um we're trying to run a Facebook live concurrent along with our YouTube live but McKenna who's usually in the background answering questions is now in the foreground she's going to give it a shot the co-host thing tonight so she's looking good got herself all made up and pretty and and um I think she likes the camera too much but um that's kind of cool she's uh one of the ones that picks the the winners so I'm the social media manager McKenna is my social media manager for the item who I'm going to pick the winners tonight Lisa's um I haven't even used them but the whole idea is kind of a really really cool idea but um tonight's topic uh is painting in the heat so if you have any if you have any questions um when it comes to me from your guys' questions but today in Boise I was out painting a huge exterior and it was the last time I looked it was 101° so it gets pretty roasty here and working in the heat can be um it's not like terribly difficult and it can be done you just there's some tips and tricks to the trade to doing it but this coool gun if you don't know what um this is a hlp gun and this thing is absolutely amazing so I don't know I got like four or five of them and um this is the one I'll be sending out so just going to open it up it's brand spanking new so here we go the maximum maximum Elite gun I always say it wrong but there it is this is a super cool gun professional this is the pro um pro model right here for professional painters um airless or hvp uh spray gun cup gun going over you know painting in the heat is the subject for the night so once again it was over 100° um I know somebody earlier today um it was 90 90 some degrees where they were in Montana I think it was Chad Rockman was paining I think that's who it was but um so it was pretty roasty where he was and if you have any tips that I'm not um bringing up or if you just want to shout out a tip throw out your tips for painting the heat because I don't know everything and um I learn a lot from you guys on my live show I learn a lot from people even um comments on my YouTube channel and leaving comments on my Instagram if you don't follow me on um Instagram or Facebook don't forget to follow me I got a lot of really cool 30 second clips and pictures and stuff on Instagram so um it's kind of where we're at so I want to show um start off I got this really cool thing so a few of the tips when it comes to painting and the Heat and this is a tip I don't know if if um any of you seen these things but this is a laser thermometer and I don't know um you can see right here in um the laser right there it sends out a little laser and it'll tell you the surface temperature of what you're painting So when it today it's pretty critical like today was over 100° and you really don't want to be painting some surfaces when are too hot and and why is that and it's it's because you stand a good chance a risk of the the paint blistering or um having some type of paint failures if it dries too fast um and so there's a lot of things you can run into because the paint with in um chemicals and stuff will evaporate out of the paint too fast it speeds up the dry time too fast um so and then when you're brushing and rolling it's going to um coagulate and stuff too fast but this thing is really really cool and um I'll show you right here so so it's measuring and it just gives you a readout right here so I don't know hopefully you can see that and it's going to tell you what the temperature of my hand is and it would read 83° I can stick it up here on the wall it's telling me my wall temperature right now is 73° and you can shoot it all the way up but I can shoot it up you know um on a two-story house up on the gutters and that's one thing you want to test those gutters um test your metal garage doors and stuff and make sure they're not too hot and um you know that's temperature is getting up in there in the 120s and 130s and stuff you should probably wait till the sun goes to the other side of the house till that's in the shade before you paint it so it's a really cool really cool device I sell these things in my um tool store and they're um not very expensive there's I think they're around somewhere around 50 bucks or 30 30 40 50 bucks something like that but um it's kind of cool so a real Handy device to have in your painting vehicle and this one's a RAC mini temp um thermometer right there I've had this thing for I don't know probably 10 years or so and every now and then we we're busting it out to um check the temperature of some surface to make sure it's okay to paint but I have a question Chris Lisa's got a question for me from um do I need to add an extender to the paint when it's 100° so it dries slower so uh that's a good question so um when we're brushing and rolling our tram I'm always trying to encourage my guys to put a latex extender in the paint when um it's that hot like today cuz it will extended dry time it'll stop it from coagulating so fast it'll um cause it to slow down and not get as much roping and stuff on it it's very very good practice to if it gets up to 85° or higher to start putting latex extender in your paint it's not going to degrade the quality of the paint at all and it's going to give you a much more working time so um that was a good question I don't know who asked that but couple people very good question couple people asked it um so another thing is um it's and this is a lot of the these things are maybe common sense but not common sense but basic but um we start at 6:30 in the morning up here and we're as soon as it it um gets light and I have an app on my phone that gives you sunrise and sunset and it gives you um the the Dusk and Dawn and stoping um when it's Dawn you'll um you know the light starts coming out you can get out there and start right away and stuff and and um you know it's kind of cool so um I don't even know what I'm saying but just start really early in the morning and um if you're waiting till 9:00 and stuff like that you're beating a lot of the cool part of the day and stuff so start at start at 6:30 and quit later or if you're like us you start at 6:30 in the morning and you work till 6:30 at night do you have any um any questions you saw up there m yeah someone said would love to know how many hours or days one has to wait after a rainstorm and if it continues to be human humid you know um so after a rain so when it's raining like we've gone out and painted houses and it'll start sprinkling raining and we'll just you know um stop a little bit and just wait till the rain goes away and it's usually never an issue if it starts pouring down rain we got to shut it down for the day if the if it's sunny the next day we start paining the next day it's um and it's usually never an issue for us I think I've always if it's you know uh cloudy and rainy the next day we just continue to shut it down but as soon as the clouds break Suns out and there's no rain we start painting again so it's good question you watching questions Brian Wagner said what some good brands of extender um latex extender I use two of I got two of them in my vehicles um I really like the xim latex extender and uh we also use the M1 latex extender so that's two of them and they're fairly fairly the same and they I like them both they perform um just as well but you know you know here's an interesting tip is last time I did a video on latex extenders and some people told me dish soap um acts the same as a latex extender which I've never tried it but um what do you do for painting in the heat Mna um I don't I give my guys the day off you do yeah yeah so who are you guys your crew yeah my BK painting yeah it's my crew cool so any more questions you see flying through there we got a lot of people just so I mean feel free to ask me yeah any questions co-host Lou Lou Lamar Lou lamardo said is it better to roll or spray on flat metal doors especially if it's hot outside so on a metal door um it's that's a good question on met of doors we always spray and we never roll them and if a door if you roll a door it's going to stipple that door so I don't think um the only time I'd ever roll a door is if there's um a lot of uh checking and um and the door is in really bad condition where it needs to be back rolled but that's really rare a metal door is not going to have that issue I spray every metal door it's the only way to get a good quality finish and you just got to wait till that um you know it's ideal not to be spraying that door if it's 100° and the sun's beating on that side just you know here's another tip we we get up in the morning and you start at 6:30 a.m. and you work where the sun you know isn't so you you know the sun's going to be on this side of the house and it's going to you know come over and be on the opposite side of the house at the end of the day and that's going to be the hottest part of the house so you'll get that one side done first and then as it comes over the house you just rotate around to the other side so we're kind of just working around the house according to where we know the sun's going to come up and come down then now there's some parts of the house that you can't um that you're just the sun's always going to be on that side or something and and I have done a few things in the past to like shade doors and stood up like cardboard leaden stuff up so it create shade on that door where I can spray that door so it's not in full sun so um you know working around the house is kind of um one of those I don't no it's not it's maybe common sense but not common sense so um uh Emanuel said that Windex works for latex extender so that's interesting see man Emmanuel quer C cose cuos uh stated on there a tip Windex um works like a latex extender it's kind of an interesting tips so um you know I guess it's a great it's a great it's cool a cool tip and stuff um not kind of interesting to know like the cost difference between latex extender is not very expensive at all and you just put a tiny bit in so it doesn't increase the the the amount of the paint so if um latex or Windex isn't like designed to be you know a latex extender but um it must he he says it works so uh it's to test it out and see someday and um I wonder what's you know Windex is pretty cheap so maybe Windex is the cheapest 518 painters is um on the show I see them on my Instagram all the time kind of cool um T says they want to know if you're going to start your own Home Improvement TV show oh this isn't a TV show you're not going to do that soon this isn't a TV show it's not it's not um I don't know I mean if it came if we had the opportunity we would start our own home improvement show so another tip I got written down let me see do um oh here this too is and this is extremely important especially on two-story houses any house you got to get on the roof up here where where we live almost all the roofs are asphalt shingles and it's kind of interesting we just we were over in London um uh doing a show and stuff over there um with Lucas Pro Tools and stuff and I I never saw an asphalt shingle the whole time I was in London they were every single roof was to roof roofs here where we live I I'd say 90% of the roofs are asphalt shingles and um very few are tile and if you have to walk on an asphalt shingle roof and it's 90° outside and there's any type of pitch to that roof you are going to scar the the the shingles and and the scaring them it leaves marks and it damages the roof so you want to get up in the morning and we always on two-story houses we get up there and mask off all that stuff the very first and spray all the upper stuff on the house first and and try our very best to work on the top of the house first and not walk on the shingles yo Lisa Lisa I think it's time for a paint Tech is how much of your work is exterior compared to interior and is it seasonal oh that's a good question so um up here in in Idaho this is I mean this is going to be different for everybody Across the Nation but where we live in Idaho it's hot in the summer extremely hot and um very seldom rains and stuff in the winter time it's freezing cold and snows and you can't you cannot do any exterior painting in the winter time and we TP we it's typically The Last 5 Years it's been pretty standard um second week of November is when we start our interior painting and we go all the way to the first week of March and so we do not do any interior painting for the entire summer and we'll give bids and estimates and we start booking stuff for the winter we've already booked quite a few jobs for winter already coming up and anybody that calls we tell them you know we don't do any interior painting CU we're so busy with exteriors we're doing four to five exteriors a week right now to show the oh there we go she trar to show there it is it's um Corner roller corner roller.com corner roller.com there you go there you go if you guys are interested in looking ask how long the nap is uh this is a 9 in right here and I don't I don't think they're making 4 in I I would a 4-in would be more handy to me than a 9 in but um so hopefully I I told them they need to make a 4-in one but um
