What happens here

The project begins with a circular area already prepared within a larger paver patio. This circular section has been excavated and filled with a compacted gravel base. A flexible edge restraint, likely made of metal or heavy-duty plastic, is installed around the perimeter of the circle to define the boundary and hold the pavers in place. Workers then start laying the first few rectangular pavers, establishing the central lines and the beginning of the herringbone pattern. A long level or straightedge is used to ensure these initial pavers are perfectly aligned and flat. A rubber mallet is used to gently tap each paver into its final position, ensuring it is seated firmly on the gravel base.

Goal: Establish the starting point and alignment for the paver pattern

Tools and materials

  • Long Level — Checking the flatness and alignment of the pavers
  • Rectangular Pavers — Forming the surface of the circular inlay
  • Rubber Mallet — Tapping pavers into place to ensure they are seated firmly and level
  • Safety Gloves — Protecting hands during handling of pavers
  • Circular Edge Restraint — Defining the circular boundary and preventing paver movement
  • Compacted Gravel Base — Providing a stable, permeable foundation for the pavers
