What happens here
To calibrate your DIY thermometer, you will need a reference thermometer (like the Taylor brand one shown). Place your homemade thermometer into a controlled environment, such as a cup of warm water, and observe how high the colored liquid rises in the straw. Mark this level on the straw or a piece of tape attached to it, noting the temperature from your reference thermometer. Repeat this process with cold water and room temperature water to create a rudimentary scale. The presenter briefly demonstrates the liquid moving up as he handles the bottle, indicating a temperature change.
Goal: Establish a temperature scale for the homemade thermometer by comparing it to known temperatures.
