What happens here

Begin by assessing the area where you intend to create a level base, such as a patio or walkway. Ensure the ground has been roughly excavated to the approximate depth required for your project's base materials. Then, strategically place adjustable metal leveling stakes, also known as screed guides, at regular intervals along the length of your work area. These stakes typically have a flat top surface and a threaded shaft that allows for height adjustments. One person positions a long spirit level across two of these stakes. The other person observes the bubble on the spirit level to determine if the stakes are at the same elevation. If the bubble indicates an uneven surface (not centered), the second person then adjusts the height of one of the stakes by rotating its top mechanism. This action raises or lowers the stake until the spirit level indicates a perfectly level or desired graded position. This process is repeated systematically along the entire length of the trench to create a series of precisely set guides that will serve as reference points for screeding your base material.

Goal: Establish a precise and consistent elevation across the work area using leveling stakes.

Tools and materials

  • Adjustable Metal Leveling Stakes — Creating fixed height reference points for screeding base materials
  • Long Spirit Level — Checking the horizontal alignment and elevation between adjustable stakes
  • Safety Glasses — Protecting eyes from dust or debris
  • Sun Hat — Protecting the wearer from sun exposure
  • Work Gloves — Protecting hands from dirt and potential abrasions
