What happens here

The Hyundai H2 Fuel Cell Excavator is introduced as the world's first hydrogen-powered wheeled excavator. Unlike battery-electric machines, it uses a hydrogen fuel cell powerpack that combines hydrogen (H2) stored in onboard tanks with oxygen (O2) from the atmosphere. This chemical reaction generates electricity to power an electric motor and hydraulic pump, with the only emission being pure water (H2O). The fuel cell powerpack is a second-generation prototype, with a third generation already in development. This system provides a full day's runtime and can be refueled in approximately 20 minutes, offering a highly efficient and zero-emission alternative to traditional diesel and even battery-electric equipment.

Goal: Understand the groundbreaking hydrogen fuel cell technology in the Hyundai Excavator.

Tools and materials

  • Electric Motor — Powered by the fuel cell to drive hydraulic pumps
  • Hose — Connecting to the top-off port for hydrogen refueling
  • Hydraulic Pump — Driven by the electric motor to operate excavator functions
  • Hydrogen Fuel Cell Powerpack — Generates electricity by combining hydrogen and oxygen
  • Hydrogen Storage Tanks — Stores the hydrogen fuel onboard the excavator
  • Hyundai H2 Fuel Cell Excavator Hyundai — The hydrogen-powered wheeled excavator, showcasing a new energy source
  • Hydrogen — Fuel for the fuel cell powerpack
  • Oxygen — Reacts with hydrogen in the fuel cell
  • Water — The only emission from the fuel cell
