What happens here
The video introduces the project by highlighting the need for grass cover on newly graded land next to a large workshop (50 by 112 feet with a 24-foot ceiling), an outdoor kitchen, and other farm equipment. The land, which previously had a steep drop-off and required 30-40 loads of dirt to level, now experiences significant water runoff and erosion, especially from downspouts and concrete areas. The solution involves sowing grass seeds and applying straw mulch. The necessary seeds include Millet (specifically German Millet), Annual Ryegrass, and Kentucky 32 Fescue. Tools for seed application include an ATV with a mounted spreader and for straw, a Honda Pioneer 1000 side-by-side with a CargoMax trailer.
Goal: Understand the problem of soil erosion and the chosen seeding strategy to address it.
Tools and materials
- ATV — Towing the seed spreader across the land
- Seed Spreader — Broadcasting grass seeds evenly over the prepared soil
- Side-by-side UTV Honda Pioneer 1000 — Towing the trailer loaded with straw bales
- Trailer CargoMax Flow Trailer — Transporting bales of straw
- Annual Ryegrass Seed — Quick-growing grass seed for rapid erosion control
- Millet Seed German Millet — Fast-germinating grass seed for initial ground cover
- Straw Bales — Mulch to cover seeds, protect from erosion, and retain moisture
