Spraying a garage door with a sprayer | Painting a metal overhead door

all right today I'm going to give you some tips and tricks spraying a garage door so my setup I'll show you or talk about just what I'm using to spray this door I got a TRC T5 sprayer I've got a 515 tip and I got an 18-in gun extension to spray the door why do I use a gun extension if I don't have a gun extension I'm going to have to bend over and I'm going have to reach up high so I have more reach with a gun extension I have more Reach This Way also with a gun extension so I don't have to walk as much I don't have to climb up ladders as much so I'm always using some type of gun extension when I'm spraying how do I spray the door um I've seen some guys spraying the door you know walking side to side and working from top to bottom or bottom up well now you got to walk the door quite a few times I want to walk the least amount that I have to that way I have a lot more energy to work out at the end of the day so I'm just going to walk it one time I typically start from left to right I'm going to go up and down and just walk the door once so another thing the gun extensions gun extensions keep you farther away from the door CU you're going to have a lot of like silica dust you have like just stuff floating in the air from the atomization of the paint so it keeps you farther away from the the substrate so you're not just in that zone of overspray you're not getting kicked back on you you just go home cleaner at the end of the day I mased we masked it mased three rows of paper you know some people are going to wonder uh should you have a drop cloth out there if you're uncomfortable with overspray I'm using a latex product I'm using bare Dynasty it flash driv extremely fast especially after it's atomized going through the gun so I'm not going to i' for I don't know maybe 20 years I've never put a drop cloth out there I've never had overspray on the concrete it really comes down to your comfort if you're uncomfortable with two rows of paper or three rows of paper then just put a drop cloth you know after you put your paper down I've masked the weather strip the door was up we Master the weather strip wrap wrapped it underneath we'll talk a little bit about pressure so I I typically I'm spraying with a 515 tip U my pressure is typically at right around 1,600 to 18800 PSI the higher the pressure the more um atomization uh the more Kickback you're going to get from the door more likely you're going to have overspray so don't run your pressure too high if you don't have a pressure gauge on your sprayer and you don't know that's going to be difficult I have a pressure gauge at my sprayer so I know exactly the pressure I'm running as soon as I spray the door um another thing is is you could get bridging from weather strip to door and that could be a big uh problem if you don't score it so we spray the door rise it and then um and let it dry up another question I do get a lot is do you spray or paint the door that's behind the weather strip that you can't see we do not paint that and I I get that question a lot the reason why is In the Heat of the day you could get your weather strip tacking to that part of the door which has happened to us we've actually had garage door openers uh rip right out of the door because the door weather strip tacked to the painted surface on the other side we just leave it powder coated your weather strip will never stick to it and it's the only time you'll ever notice that is while the door is rising up this on the door behind is white this is a a kind of like an off- white so you wouldn't even really see the difference anyway anyways if the door was previously a brand new knew was black and now you're painting it white you could see that but it's never been an issue I've never had a customer ever question it and so we don't paint behind the weather strip so I'm going to get over here we're going to spray this door uh we sprayed the stacco I'm not worried about overspray getting on the stucco because I've got the the trim that blocks it and it keeps the the overspray from kicking you know outward right there I'm going to be spraying I'm coming down the line I'm overlapping 50% I always start off my first PA and I um started off twice because as you're moving along the line you're overlapping 50% and that first pass wouldn't get um two coats on it and so it'd probably be light on where it is um the color that the stucco got on there so two passes to start two passes to f um finish uh 50% overlap in the middle and it's going to be coated make sure um this is one and done we spray um one coat on here overlap 50% and the garage door is done so here we go we're going to spray it give you a look at what it looks like [Music] [Applause] [Music] so I guess the first thing I thought was I lost power but I um I turned the pressure up a little bit and it cycled so I knew I had power and I knew I had pressure at the pump cuz I got a gauge right there and it it was at you know like 1,800 PSI so I knew I had pressure I knew I had power but I didn't have paint coming out here so a little bit of troubleshooting we're going to think um see if we're back in business [Music] [Applause] [Music] so just ran into a little problem uh whip got clogged but uh the drawer if the door dried right there I wouldn't want to start right in the middle again and move down the line I'd want to just start from the end and continue going again but it was still wet we continued on where we're going it spit a little bit in the middle when it all everything shut down but because of the Grain on the metal right there you won't see that spit at all um you want to just check your edges make sure everything got covered it got covered 100% otherwise you could go around the perimeter one more time but covered 100% just choose a speed that's going to you know get everything covered 100% and one pass so you don't have to come back redo it again now I'm going to raise this garage door and allow it to dry up so I got uh my door I raise my door I always raise it up right here cuz I pull the masking off the bottom so I'm going to pull always pull the masking out the bottom I know I get this um I get this question you know um quite often so there's a car behind there are you worried about the car getting overspray on it and I'm not and you can see how the door it overlaps right here nothing gets through this door this is a um it's a insulated door nothing's going to get through that crack the way it overlaps so no overspray on the car don't need to worry about it
