What happens here
Begin by thoroughly assessing the area where the concrete slab will be poured. This involves clearing any existing debris, evaluating the current ground conditions, and planning the final dimensions and elevation (grade) of the slab. Critically, identify and mark the precise locations for any underground utilities, such as plumbing lines for bathrooms and kitchens, or electrical conduits. This initial planning phase, utilizing tools like a measuring tape, marking paint or stakes, and a level, will dictate where trenches will need to be dug and how much sub-base material will be required.
Goal: Determine slab dimensions, grade, and utility locations.
Tools and materials
- Level — Checking the existing ground level and planning the final grade for the sub-base
- Marking Paint/Stakes — Marking out the slab perimeter and the routes for utility lines
- Measuring Tape — Measuring dimensions of the slab area and planning elevations
- Rake — Spreading and leveling soil during rough grading
- Safety Gloves — Protecting hands during site clearing and initial digging
- Shovel — Clearing debris and initial rough grading of the soil
