What happens here

While the video doesn't show the actual construction of the fire pit, the design plan explicitly includes a central gas fire pit. This step, occurring concurrently with or after paver laying, involves constructing the fire pit structure (e.g., using a pre-made kit or fire-rated blocks) according to manufacturers' instructions and integrating any gas lines. Use a level and shims to ensure the fire pit is plumb and level. Once pavers are laid and the fire pit is secure, polymeric sand is swept into the paver joints using a broom and then activated with water from a garden hose to lock the pavers in place and inhibit weed growth. The entire patio is then compacted once more with a plate compactor fitted with a rubber pad to settle the pavers, consolidate the bedding sand, and properly seat the polymeric sand.

Goal: Complete the fire pit structure and lock paver joints

Tools and materials

  • Broom — Sweeping polymeric sand into paver joints
  • Fire Pit Kit/Materials — Building the structure of the fire pit
  • Garden Hose with Fine Spray — Activating the polymeric sand
  • Leaf Blower — Clearing excess polymeric sand from the paver surface before watering
  • Level — Ensuring the fire pit components are plumb and level
  • Plate Compactor with Rubber Pad — Performing the final compaction of the laid pavers and seating the polymeric sand
  • Shims — Making minor adjustments to level fire pit components
  • Polymeric Sand — Filling paver joints to lock them in place and prevent weed growth
