What happens here
This video details the process of establishing and managing temporary rotational grazing sections within a pasture using electric fencing and movable water troughs. The process involves setting up polybraid electric fence lines with step-in posts to create smaller, defined grazing areas (akin to large-scale garden beds or plots) and relocating water tanks to ensure livestock have access to water in each new section. The goal is to maximize pasture health and productivity through intensive grazing.

(13,620 characters)guys today me and mrs stoneyridge are going to take you along and show you how we do a cattle move and we just moved them from brown to ultra green awesome grass and this is a daily move for our cows now hey there folks this is josh stoney ridge farmer welcome back to the farm i've got my crazy companion with me and we are on the atv heading across the farm uh it's gonna be a pretty good time today what we're gonna do is show you guys how we do a cattle move and we're about to move our cows to a new section of pasture we're gonna set up some temporary fence we're gonna have a little bit of fun we'll just take you guys along uh for a day in the life here so we're moving the cows on smaller and smaller sections you'll get to see that from the drone footage they've gobbled up all of the food from yesterday we move them at about 4 p.m every afternoon and it's just gonna be a good time so me and mrs stoney ridge are going to put together the teamwork thing and hook up to our electric wire and move the cows over it's gonna be fun all right i ain't afraid of work i ain't afraid to play i ain't afraid to get the job done and do it my own damn way i ain't afraid of life times like this if you mess with my freedom i'll tell you just what you can kiss all right guys this is mrs stoney ridge the crazy chicken lady today and what we're doing today is we're going to be moving our cows from a section of pasture they've been on for 24 hours we're starting our intensive grazing program here on the farm and it is intense it learning this is intense so we have no permanent water solution over here on this side of the farm we do on the other side of the farm we have a well on the other side of the farm there's approximately 90 acres over here that we don't have a water solution for so we're using the abi water trailer right here we just back to the creek about every four days and we fill that up with a thousand gallons of water and we have 300 gallons of water storage with tanks you'll see us dragging those tanks here in just a minute that's the abi water trailer this is the tymt 1104 it's the big dog and that's what helps me pull the water trailer way up the hill from the creek now let's show you what the cows are doing you nodding having fun yes i am we're getting ready to have some fun so let me show you what the cows are doing here they're still grazing this plot but you can see a distinct line you'll really be able to see it from the drone footage i'm trying not to back into this wiring getting a zap in the butt but green not so green this was eaten down yesterday the last 24 hours this is the next 24 hours and we're gonna run a polyelectric line here and it's poly braid with step in post their strain right step in posts are the best you can get you can get them at farm fence solutions there are fence people you get it right across here we'll post a link down the video description for you that's what we got to do so first we got to drag our water tanks up get the water tanks full we know that the cows will drink 300 gallons of water over a 24 hour period so once they drink the tanks dry which is typically around four o'clock we'll pull them up to the next paddock also gonna show you that trick i got some new tricks up my sleeve [Music] a little bit more manual labor than we typically would want to experience over here i'm going to get shocked so this is a tartar farm and ranch 150 gallon water tank and we've got one more that we're going to move this is our exercise for the day so getting strong we're going gonna pull both these up here we'll move the water trailer up to the next paddock as soon as these water tanks are empty and that'll be on the corner of two paddocks we'll show you that from the air awesome now we've got our two water tanks in place we're going to take you guys down here and show you the equipment that we use to section off the section of pasture where'd the water come from it's the stoney ridge i got in a fight with the mr stoney ridge what happened i don't know so there's no infrastructure right here other than this single strand poly braid wire what we're going to do is we're gonna run from this post here straight across the pasture to where we have some white posts stuck in the ground these are step end posts these are also strain right step in post but these are a different style you could use a two wire four wire five wire i guess one two three yeah you could use this for goats and stuff like this for cows we just have the 33 inch strain right step in post these are the pigtail strain right that's a strain right post they have the step in the metal step in the really good posts these are the good ones okay guys don't go looking at that cheap stuff that you can buy on on other websites and the stuff at your local farm store if it doesn't say strain right it's not the best that's the best stuff this stuff's made in new zealand so what we're going to do is we're going to be tying on to this fence cold this is tornado wire and when i say cold means that this fence is not energized that fence is energized so we'll tie on coal to this here in just a minute i'll show you a cool tool that i made in order to do that with just a piece of pvc pipe okay so this is how the strain right post steps in the ground each one will go the same direction okay so stepping into the ground the reason these are the good posts is because of the steel okay we're gonna go 10 steps between so about 30 feet between post we want to make sure we get all the high spots and the low spots in the undulations of the land so that's how we are going gonna do this we're gonna take off this way one two the ground's really hard it's really hard to get these guys in so we're gonna put our last post right here beside our current post here give us a little bit of support that's it we got some extras now we're gonna go get the reel of wire and we'll unreal that wire right across where we're sectioning off our pasture it's windy and it's toasty out here so self-designed copycat design from my buddy greg judy here similar design to what he hooks onto his hot wires with but this is what we have i made these yet up yesterday says hot on it what i took was a piece of electrical pvc pipe and a piece of strap material metal strap material and i ran it through there put a self-tapping screw in so we have a handle right here that we can't get shocked from i drilled a hole through there and i ran my poly braid through there tied a knot in here just that simple knot pulls tight we're gonna hook onto our hot wire right here at the post so it has a little bit more extra support and before we hook on to it we better have our reel in our hand because it's gonna knock the lever loving snot out of me you can see i have a groove cut in there and that groove is going to lay right in here and that energizes this wire and this entire reel right here okay now for our purposes we don't want to energize this until we're ready so what we're going to do is we're just going to hang it on this post give her a couple twists just like so and then we'll head down the line with our reel so this is our strain right post the reason we didn't energize our wire is because we're going to run them through our strain right post just like that this is the easy way the pigtails are the easy way and it just rolls right off this reel be sure you run their wire through there trust me right this is a geared reel right here very very handy critter to have so the reason we're not energized is because if we were energized everything metal on this reel would be energized here's what we do this is a lock it's a locking mechanism to lock the reel in place so when we hang it on the fence down here we're going to hang it by the rubber piece so that it's not energized on that fence and grounding out the way we release it so that the reel will continue to roll let's just put this little tab up and then the wire comes off now we'll get down here to the post and show you how it goes on the post this is so simple guys so we're here on our strain right post that's it that's all it is it just floats it free floats in that post right there pretty cool so let me show you again just like that and then we'll head on back down to our next post [Music] so it always pays to not be 10 feet short on your wires so we're about 10 feet short we're gonna have to splice in another little piece of wire right here so since we ran out of wire here's what we do it's just this simple uh for splicing this poly wire or poly braid it's not poly wire it's tougher than poly wire it's tougher than the stuff that you get at your local farm store but all we do step on over this way miss stoney ridge all we do is take two together and just tie a simple knot a granny knot you guys tell me what kind of knot that is but that's it that's how we splice it together and now this one is spliced to the end look at this pile going here i put an extra bit on it because we're going to be moving this around just a little bit so i put an extra 60 feet or so so we've spliced onto the end that runs that way now we're going to splice onto the end it runs through our reel just like so very very simple now i've got to reel in the access that i just made a boo-boo on so i'll take my foot give it a little tension right here and just reel it all in now we back in business but don't leave your knife on the ground how many knives have i lost out here at least three knives while working but at least they're not open out of here somewhere so continue on and hook in to the end down here here we go this is it so we're all the way to the end we'll reel this up tight actually put our tab down reeler up tight make sure we're pulling it tight enough to hold it in place this will be energized but this rubber handle will not be energized so if this was hot i wouldn't be touching any of this right now but all we're going to do is hang it on to our tornado titan this is actually tornado uh 13 13 line wires 48 inches tall six 13 48 6. cool that's it just like that very very simple okay now we're gonna head back down the line and we're gonna energize this and we're gonna move the cows all right guys so here we are we're at the end this is not hot yet so i don't have to worry about it it will be hot in just a second though now oh come on baby i just stuck this on here to hold it in place for a little while all we got to do again is run our hot wire right in through here that's it that's all we have to do that little groove right there this is cold right now and when i say hot i mean energized now that's looped over and that's energized and we can take this off and move it very very easily all we have to do is wind that reel back in now mrs stoney ridge is going to let the cows into the new pasture and you guys are going to love this the sound of these cows eating it's just awesome hey guys i'm out here filling up the water tanks for the cows it takes about 10 minutes to fill each tank so we're getting ready to open up the fence for the cows so i'm gonna open it up but i'm touching just the plastic so that i do not get shocked on the hotline is this your first time doing this it is i'm trusting you fully happy girls let me get it [Music] come on baby it's all right come on come on girl still at six babies we're still waiting on that last one all right for a successful move good job yeah yeah farm girl in the house and we got two stubborn donkeys that don't want to go in so typically we'll walk in behind the donkeys uh just like so go ahead and go grab the other end and grab that post if you will and we'll get them all buttoned up all right so what we did here was we took out one post and we brought the wire down this way we pulled it tight and put it in the ground so that the cows would go over to the next paddock [Music] all right we're going to put this last post in the ground and we're going to hook the fence back up and we're gonna hook her back up here and make it hot we should be good to go easy as that all right guys that's it that is the daily routine on the daily move of our cows mrs stoney ridge gets a taste of it when she's off of work and i get a taste of it every day so it takes we won't have to run these lines over and over and over again eventually all the stuff will be temporarily permanent i guess is the word for it uh we've got basically a permanent structure and you could see it from the drone footage how some of it looked darker where they had eaten the grass down and you can see these guys are just chowing down munching right here so you're gonna munch it all the way down to the ground we're gonna get some rain tonight which is gonna make everything green up again and it's just awesome it's a cool cycle isn't it it really is yeah it's interesting to watch the grass just totally recover really really quickly and we're in about a 35 acre section of pasture with 30 cows and we'll just keep on moving them around and around and around and stimulating that growth and getting that good butt fertilizer yep right on so we got one more water tank that we're sitting on we got to get it filled up and that'll be it we'll get you some footage of the cows much and you can hear them back there just crunching up grass so guys thanks a lot for joining us here on the stoney ridge farm today this is what's going on this is day to day operations it's a good time isn't it always is all right thanks guys we'll see you next time yeah what do you think mm-hmm little yeah oh yeah uh-huh shocking experience enough good times
