What happens here

Once the black dirt is removed and the sub-grade is established, the next crucial phase is to construct a robust sub-base using recycled asphalt pavement, commonly referred to as "millings." These millings are delivered to the site by large dump trucks. A dozer then takes over, spreading the millings uniformly across the prepared area. Following spreading, the millings must be thoroughly compacted to create a dense, interlocking layer. This compacted sub-base provides a stable foundation that resists settling, ensuring the longevity and structural integrity of the final asphalt surface.

Goal: Create a compact, stable foundation to prevent asphalt settlement.

Tools and materials

  • Compactor/Roller — Compacting the asphalt millings to achieve a dense and stable sub-base
  • Dozer John Deere — Spreading and initial leveling of the asphalt millings
  • Dump Truck — Delivering asphalt millings to the construction site
  • Asphalt Millings N/A — Creating a stable and non-settling sub-base for the asphalt pavement
