What happens here

This guide provides instructions on how to propagate (clone) hydrangeas and butterfly bushes using cuttings, rooting hormone, and potting soil. The process involves taking cuttings from mature plants, preparing them by removing excess leaves and exposing nodes, applying rooting hormone, and planting them in individual cups with soil. These propagated plants can then be grown to maturity, increasing the number of flowering plants around the home or garden.

hey folks this is Josh Turner your age farmer welcome to the farm blog today we're taking a little break a little break from farming a little break from chickens a little break from gardening and a little break from cutting hay and we're gonna show you something pretty cool we're gonna show you how to propagate hydrangeas and how to propagate the butterfly bush so come along today we're gonna have some fun enjoying ourselves propagating plants so that we can have more flowers around the farm or you can have more flowers around the house these methods are tried-and-true I try them and it's true and it works and we'll show you so anytime I can pass on any kind of knowledge to you guys I think it's a good time so come along today we'll have some fun on the farm blog hit do a little something different I got a bucket full of butterfly bush cuttings awesome want to give a little shout out to my buddy arms family homestead go check him out Daniel at arms family homestead and also check out old Datchet keepin it Dutch I don't have a shirt on today but he's a cool dude good people guys really good people country people so what we have here is a bucket of cuttings basically we had a big storm the other day and the storm broke off a big old chunk of my butterfly bush now my butterfly bush has grown I'm gonna say 4 feet over the last month so we're getting prolific growth right now with this butterfly bush and we're also getting prolific growth with our hydrangea so we have beautiful hydrangea out front I like to keep these flowers and put them in a little mason jar and set them on the table and mrs. Stoney Ridge kind of likes it too so what we're gonna do here is I'm going to show you how to propagate hydrangeas and how to propagate butterfly bushes very very simple I never knew it was that simple until I tried it myself I was just out tinkering around because my mind stays busy so here's what we've got we've got some hydrangea cuttings and really almost dropped that one really you want to get the wood iasts type stock and you can see right here we'll go ahead and clip these leaves back so we're on my porch and we're gonna make a mess it's alright so we're gonna clip these leaves back right here and this is where we cut so we cut our hydrangea off right before that node right there and this node is going to be a root producing node okay also we've got another node right here so we want to snip these off these guys off okay get them out of the way and we want to take our leaves which are going to be dissipating moisture okay so we want to get rid of most of our leafy substance here so what I'll do is I will top it out I will cut the very tip top out and I will take these leaves and I will cut them down probably to about a third of the leaf material that I had before okay now guys this is cheap this is simple this is easy this is going to save you money if you want to plant flowers around your house if you can give them to your neighbor it'll make them smile I tell you that so what we have here we've got two sets of leaves on the top and you can do this with one set of leaves or two sets of leaves I just kind of clip them back right here okay very very simple now I'll show you the secret so here is the secret ingredient it's called fast route from Miracle Grow there'll be links down in the video description to everything I use here in the video basically we'll dip this hydrangea into some water over here and then we'll dip it right over here into our root grow okay and this right here will stimulate it's a hormone and it stimulates the root growth and basically from here we take that and we take a cup hard to do this I need three hands we'll take a cup here and we'll take our finger and we'll push down in there okay and this dirt is semi-dry right now okay I'm going to push down in but you don't want to push all the way to the bottom then you want to take and you want to place your hydrangea cutting in here you want to pack it around there and then you want to water it thoroughly okay but you don't want to do is over water this cutting now you can see it's sticking way out here so we might as well go in and take out this top piece right here now you see these little leaves they'll be fine these bigger leaves are gonna be dissipating humidity and dissipating moisture you want to keep these in a cool place so you want to set them inside your house in a little tray somewhere by a window or by your back sliding glass door keep them watered and they will root SuperDuper awesome now we'll take this cutting and we're gonna do probably five or six of these okay guys so out of five or six of these you'll probably have three or four that will survive and the rest will die they're going to die it's okay it doesn't cost anything it's fun it's free and it's neat to see this little plant will wilt down and start looking bad and then all of a sudden it'll now guys you want to take this and you want to put it in a cool spot in your house with a little bit of Sun so put it by that back sliding glass door in a tray and keep it watered but don't give it too much water today will be the day that you soaked it down and from there you just want to barely keep it moist because you can cause the soil to mildew or rot and you don't want to do that you want to keep it in a cool place so that it establishes root and then you'll have more hydrangeas the next one we're gonna do is our butterfly bush now butterfly bushes are even easier to propagate than the hydrangea okay the hydrangeas are kind of sensitive it's best to do this closer to the fall but we're right in the middle of summer and I just feel like playing with it so we're gonna have some fun with these and let's show you how we do the butterfly bush okay alright so here's our butterfly bush cutting and as you can see it's been soaking in water I had it in a five-gallon bucket and it won't hurt it to do that so soak them in water for a day or so but don't soak them for too awful long because you'll start causing them to rot okay so we want to cut off right here all the way up against that stalk and then cut just below it at a slight angle boom away it goes I got some mess to clean up on the porch here that's okay it's worth it so also right here you can see there are some more Stocki areas right here I'm gonna cut this back and you want to cut this guy a little bit back to these propagate very very very easily guys very easily SuperDuper cool we actually have two good cuttings right here but this will be the one that we use and I'm gonna again cut my leaf back okay I'm gonna take it I'm gonna dip it in a cup of water very simply as it's in the water I'm gonna take my finger right there and poke a hole down and get him out of the water and dip that node right there into my rooting hormone slide him down into the pot and this is kind of a woody stalk okay so you want to try this with several different kinds of stalks just give it a try doesn't cost anything it's really fun and this is just regular potting soil right here okay so we'll set this to the side let's show you one more just so that you kind of get the gist of all this all right okay so here is a prime candidate for propagation this is the woody part of the stalk it has a lot of nodes on it that are very close together now ideally you want to try and bury two sets of nodes up so that it gets a good root set okay I'm cutting all this back and I just want to leave probably the top two little sections here now I can use this for another routing okay I can use that piece for another routing I want to cut these back basically all the way back to here and this is what I have left I have my stick I've got several root nodes in here I want to cut closer to those root nodes up this way give it a little angle cut I'm gonna dip it it's already been soaking in water so dip it in my rooting hormone and once again jab my finger right down in the center of that pot there and this is just a solo cup the Red Solo Cup and will mash him down in there and make sure that we've got them in there nice and tight now once you water them pack them down in there good put them in a fairly cool place and you'll probably have two-thirds success with your cuttings over here beside me I'll show you the cuttings that we've done over the last couple months here okay and this whole process takes somewhere in the neighborhood of a month to a month and a half so be patient take it easy it's okay take deep breaths it's gonna work and it's gonna be awesome check them out so right here where this honeybees having a blast is one of our soft stocks that we propagated we didn't even use rooting hormone on these and we did seven of them and one two three four five of these survived and those are green peppers for a garden right there you can also do this with most other plants so folks I hope you've enjoyed this little video on how to propagate or clone your butterfly bush or your hydrangea kind of fun I just enjoy doing this kind of stuff and you know it's hot outside I can't do anything in the middle of the day so I'll sit here in the shade and I'll make myself some new bushes and we'll plant them all down along our creeks and have a beautiful place for pollinators cool thanks a lot guys and we'll see you next time on Stoney Ridge farm be sure and pound that like button subscribe to the channel if you want to see more stuff like this leave a comment and if you have any suggestions or questions please post it down there in the comments and we'll see you next time on the Stoney Ridge farm Channel alright [Music] hereit's we've had some ways opposed to me stone Tyrion Oh
