What happens here
With the rammer compactor running, firmly grasp the handles and guide the machine over the loose gravel. The compactor will 'jump' and impact the surface, driving the gravel particles closer together. Move the compactor slowly and deliberately, allowing it to complete several impacts in one spot before moving forward slightly. Work in parallel lines across the entire gravel area, ensuring each pass overlaps the previous one by about half the width of the compaction plate to achieve uniform compaction. Continue making passes over the entire gravel area until the desired density is reached, which can be observed by the reduced dust generation and a firmer, more stable feel of the gravel. The video shows the compactor effectively working on a section of gravel next to a concrete curb.
Goal: Achieve a densely compacted and stable gravel base.
Tools and materials
- Hearing Protection — Muting the loud operational noise of the compactor
- Heavy-duty Gloves — Protecting hands and absorbing some of the machine's vibration
- Rammer Compactor — Compacting gravel to create a stable base
- Safety Glasses — Protecting eyes from dust and small flying gravel particles
- Loose Gravel — The material being compacted to form a stable foundation
