Installing Outcropping Blocks and Initial Backfill

What happens here
Large, irregular concrete blocks or natural stones, commonly referred to as outcropping blocks, are carefully positioned onto the compacted crushed stone base. These blocks form the aesthetic and structural face of the retaining wall. As each course of blocks is laid, the geotextile fabric is brought up behind it, creating a "wrapper" or pocket. The space behind the blocks, and within this fabric pocket, is then filled with additional crushed stone. This crushed stone acts as a drainage layer and reinforces the wall structure, while the fabric prevents the surrounding soil from migrating into and clogging this drainage system.
Goal: Construct the primary structure of the retaining wall by laying blocks and adding drainage backfill.
Tools and materials
- Crushed Stone — Backfilling behind the wall blocks for drainage and reinforcement
- Excavator Kubota — Assisting with lifting and precisely placing large, heavy outcropping blocks
- Geotextile Fabric — Continuing to separate backfill from native soil and creating a drainage envelope
- Level — Ensuring each course of blocks is correctly leveled and has the desired batter
- Outcropping Retaining Wall Blocks — Forming the visible face and structural integrity of the retaining wall
- Shovel — Moving and positioning crushed stone backfill
