Compact Polymeric Sand into Paver Joints

What happens here
Begin by ensuring polymeric sand is spread evenly over the dry paver surface, covering all joints. This is typically done using a broom or stiff brush to sweep the sand into the gaps. Once the sand is distributed, use a vibratory plate compactor (referred to as a 'sand rattler' in the video) to work across the entire paver area. The machine's vibrations cause the polymeric sand to settle deeply into the paver joints, filling them completely and creating a strong interlock between the pavers. The video shows the operator steadily guiding the compactor over the surface, generating visible dust as the sand vibrates into place. Continue compacting until all joints are filled and the pavers are firmly set, making several passes in different directions over the entire area.
Goal: Fill and compact sand into paver joints for stability.
Tools and materials
- Broom/Stiff Brush — Spreading polymeric sand evenly over the paver surface and sweeping it into the joints
- Dust Mask — Protecting respiratory system from inhaling fine sand dust generated during compaction
- Hearing Protection — Protecting ears from the loud noise produced by the plate compactor
- Safety Glasses — Protecting eyes from airborne dust particles and debris
- Vibratory Plate Compactor — Vibrating polymeric sand into paver joints and compacting the pavers
- Polymeric Sand — Filling and binding paver joints to lock them in place and inhibit weed growth
