Implement a Waterproof Pond Liner and Drainage System

Raised planter against the house? #hardscape #paverpatio #unilock
What happens here
After the structural block wall is in place, install a durable, waterproof pond liner (also referred to as a pond membrane) along the interior side of the concrete block wall and extending up the house's foundation. The liner should cover the entire side of the house that will be in contact with soil and extend sufficiently above the anticipated soil level. Additionally, the liner should line the bottom of the planter. This membrane serves as a critical moisture barrier, preventing water from the soil or irrigation from seeping into the house's foundation, which could lead to wood rot, mold, and structural compromise. A layer of 'base stone' (gravel) is placed at the bottom of the planter, and the pond liner is configured to direct water downwards into this gravel layer, which then facilitates effective drainage away from the house, especially in regions like Michigan where proper water management is crucial.
Goal: Protect the house foundation from moisture and ensure proper drainage.
Tools and materials
- Base stone — Creating a drainage layer at the bottom of the planter
- Pond liner — Creating a waterproof barrier against the house foundation and within the planter
- Utility knife — Cutting the pond liner to size and shape
