What happens here

This DIY project guides you through the process of replacing a faulty Temperature and Pressure (T&P) relief valve on a water heater. The T&P valve is a critical safety device that prevents the water heater from exceeding safe pressure or temperature limits, which could lead to dangerous conditions. The project involves diagnosing the leak, safely draining the water heater to the appropriate level, removing the old valve, preparing and installing the new valve with proper sealing techniques, refilling the tank, bleeding air from the system, and relighting the pilot and main burner. It also includes a plan for extending the drain pipe for long-term safety.

So, he had water leaking all over his floor coming out of this valve. The temperature and pressure relief valve will go off if the pressure exceeds 150 PSI or the temperature reaches over 210°. Open this up. Got some draining going on. So, I grabbed two different size shanks here. It's better to take something back at the end of a job than to have to run out and get something else. So, we cracked this. There we go. We might want a crescent wrench or a pliers wrench like this, but this is hand tight. You can see right there that threads are starting. This is going to be this inch and a quarter shank. I like to go Teflon and then pipe dope. You only have to drain your tank to the bottom of the T&P valve. And you can see the build-up in this. I'm going to just go right back in. All right, we can get enough torque with this bad boy. So, to get a little more straight. All right, we go. I'm going to slowly open that to fill this up. Just getting all the air out of the line. We got to turn the gas on. Switch this over to pilot. Click that down. Hit the igniter. You want to hold this down until the pilot light stays on. We're able to flip this to on and it fires up. The water heater has shut off. It turns out that it was T&P failed. I'm going to talk with my neighbor. We'll come back over. We'll actually extend the length of this drain pipe right here to go over to the floor drain.
