hey folks that fix it guy here and today we're gonna be talking about those little shutoff valves that are behind your toilet or underneath your sink this is the angle stop and sometimes these little buggers can be really hard to get off i've actually had a few comments lately about these things and i just wanted to shoot a quick little video let's talk about it they make a cool little specialty tool that'll help you take this off but if you don't have that it's okay we got that hooked up too so come along let's get to fixing [Music] [Applause] [Music] okay so this is the setup that you're likely to run into underneath your kitchen sink or behind your toilet you know this is the way it's going to be set up i just got it set up in my little table vice here this is an older one that i've had out my garage that's going to recycle but it's going to work out great for the purpose that we're doing today as you can see this has not been uh kind to me we actually need to put some gloves on wear gloves when working with metal to save your hands so much more unless you think cuts are cool right then uh but this is what we're looking at today i've had a couple comments about these things being hard to get off at times right and the fact that it's in weird places already makes it hard so you want to make it as simple as possible the first thing i can tell you is if this is hard to come off grab a heat gun okay don't grab a torch you might burn your house down grab a heat gun and just go around those threads right there and give that a heat up why because there's a chance that somebody used some kind of a pipe dope that is not like mega lock all right this stuff does not get hard the way some other thread sealants get hard we're gonna do a comparison video here soon and i'll show you what i'm talking about because some pipe dopes they're not all the same right and some get really hard and if somebody put some of that on there to try to prevent some kind of a leak well it might be a little bit hard to get off so use the heat so when you go to remove this i like the adjustable jaw i carry a couple different wrenches in my bucket i carry a 10 inch an 8 inch and a 4 inch well these usually will do the trick right you're able to get this on here and i know that so here's the thing when you're underneath the toilet underneath the sink the proper use of adjustable jaw kind of goes out the window you're going to use this any which way you can to try to get that off and if you get a little bit better leverage this way then you do this way well then you're gonna do it right that's just the nature of the beast so okay so if you come around here you can actually see now that this is a little bit close together right and this actually is gonna work a lot better for getting this apart one of my friends a long time ago my air force career taught me this trick the closer they are the easier this is going to come apart this is with any wrenches you use right if you can do this it's going to just save you tons of headache and so then you're able to just take this and really the leverage just let it do its work man and ma'am that just comes off super easy at that point so that's one way two adjustable jaws you could also use two opened end wrenches if you have this the right size open in wrenches i think this is a 5 16 nut i'm not sure what size that is but you could use those as well i just don't carry them the other wrench is going to be this rigid one stop wrench right you've seen me use this before this bottom piece screws out of here and this piece right here goes right where the water supply hooks up the one thing with this is you want to make sure that there's a nut on here if there's not a nut on here very good chance that you'll end up stripping that out bending it making it oblong you'll do something there okay and so the same principle when you're trying to get these two apart is the closer you can get these two wrenches the better off it's gonna be and personally i think this actually allows you to get a little bit closer than the other two wrenches just because the angle of this design and man like because you can actually stick this right on the top of this and they've designed it specifically for that you just get you get a really good close setup with that and then you're able to just really take that down super easy right it is really awesome now to be fair this was not on there super crazy tight but let's just put it on there just to demonstrate how tight we can get it and then how easy it is to come off i mean that's pretty tight and now right there yeah it's just so easy works very well that and the fact that this is like a super slim design and this goes right in the top of this because let's face it angle stops are kind of awkward right if i pull this off and you look at the shape of this thing well it it's definitely awkward man this has come in handy if you're only changing a couple of these you're probably not going to buy one of these let's be real all right unless you're a real big tool aficionado or a plumber you're probably not going to buy one but most people have adjustable jaws so that's what i want to show you today is that a little bit of heat on here helps you get that off grab your adjustable jaws or grab your one stop wrench and you can pop that apart the other thing that i want to show you real quick and we'll just come to right here get down in this is these threads that's not what seals this okay this knot and these threads are not what seals it it's this little bevel right here on the inside of this and this ferrule right here that's actually what seals this that's where your pipe dope should go you actually don't even have to put any pipe dope or teflon on these threads right here at all just put a little bit right around here and you're good to go that way when this goes to come off it's gonna be easy now you've seen me probably put a little bit of mega lock on the threads as well and i don't put a lot i put a little because this stuff it does not get hard right so it actually is kind of like an anti-seize and that's pretty good you need that you want that all right folks just a little recap you're looking to get an angle stop off that just won't budge remember try a little key all right and then adjustable jaw wrenches don't use channel locks i know they work but they also mar married up and there's potential for some brass splinters in your fingers all right gloves this is a knuckle buster job dude you totally will get busted up i got busted up and i didn't even have to get it out all right i just did it right here it's what it is and then if you're looking for a specialty wrench ridgid makes a one-stop range right they're a plumbing tool company these guys have been doing a long time and this thing has been pretty sweet it really does help out in a pinch not an everyday tool that you're gonna use but if you're having difficulty this is a good little one or you're a plumber you're looking for something that's gonna save you a little time this is your bad boy all right i really hope you guys enjoyed the video
