What happens here

Following the initial troweling and edging, a worker uses a float to perform the final smoothing and refinement of the concrete surface. This involves drawing a bull float (for larger, more accessible areas) or a hand float (for detailed, smaller sections and edges) across the concrete. Floating helps to embed any remaining aggregate particles just below the surface, brings a rich, thin layer of cement paste (known as "cream") to the top, and further consolidates the concrete. This action removes any minor surface irregularities, prepares the surface for subsequent texturing (such as a broom finish or a smooth power troweled finish, though not explicitly shown here), and ultimately ensures a durable, uniform, and aesthetically pleasing appearance for the newly installed pool coping or decking.

Goal: Achieve a smooth, dense, and uniform concrete surface, ready for final texturing or curing.

Tools and materials

  • Concrete float — To smooth and refine the concrete surface after screeding and initial troweling
  • Ready-mix concrete — The material being finished and smoothed
