What happens here
The initial phase of creating a luxury paver walkway involves thorough site preparation. This includes excavating the area to the required depth, typically 6-10 inches, to accommodate the sub-base and pavers. A geotextile fabric can be laid down to prevent weed growth and improve soil stability. Next, a granular sub-base, such as crushed stone or gravel, is spread evenly and compacted using a plate compactor. This layer provides essential drainage and structural support. Finally, a leveling bed of paver sand or screed is spread over the compacted sub-base, carefully leveled using screed bars and a straight edge to ensure a perfectly flat surface for the pavers.
Goal: Create a stable and level foundation for the pavers
Tools and materials
- Level — Checking the grade and flatness of the base layers
- Plate Compactor — Compacting the sub-base and sand setting bed
- Rake — Spreading and leveling granular materials
- Screed Bars — Creating a uniform depth for the sand setting bed
- Shovel — Excavating soil and spreading base materials
- Straight Edge — Leveling the sand setting bed across the screed bars
- String Line — Establishing straight lines and consistent grades
- Crushed Stone — Providing a stable and well-draining foundation
- Geotextile Fabric — Separating soil from aggregate, preventing weed growth, and enhancing stability
- Paver Sand — Creating a smooth, level bed for pavers to rest on
