What happens here

After removing the old concrete, excavate the entire area designated for the new paver patio, steps, and retaining wall to a depth of approximately 8-10 inches (20-25 cm) to accommodate the base layers. Remove all topsoil, roots, and any loose debris. Lay down a heavy-duty geotextile fabric across the entire excavated area; this helps prevent the base material from mixing with the subgrade and improves stability. Next, spread a 4-6 inch (10-15 cm) layer of compacted crushed gravel or road base (e.g., limestone base). Use a plate compactor to thoroughly compact the gravel in multiple passes until it is dense and stable. Ensure the base is sloped away from the house (typically 1/4 inch per foot or 2%) for proper drainage, using a level and string line to check the grade.

Goal: Create a stable and properly drained foundation for the new hardscaping.

Tools and materials

  • Gloves — Protecting hands during heavy labor
  • Level — Checking the grade and levelness of the sub-base
  • Pickaxe — Breaking up stubborn soil or small rocks during excavation
  • Plate Compactor — Compacting the gravel sub-base for stability
  • Safety Glasses — Protecting eyes during excavation and compaction
  • Shovel — Excavating soil and spreading gravel
  • String Line — Establishing straight lines and consistent grades
  • Wheelbarrow — Transporting excavated soil and gravel
  • Crushed Gravel — Creating the compacted sub-base for the patio and wall
  • Geotextile Fabric — Separating the sub-base from the subgrade and enhancing stability
