What happens here

With the filter fabric in place, crushed stone aggregate is now spread over the fabric. This is done in incremental 'lifts' of approximately 3 to 4 inches (7.5-10 cm) at a time. After each layer of stone is spread, it is thoroughly compacted using a diesel-powered compactor, similar to the one used for the soil. This repetitive process of spreading and compacting in thin layers ensures that the entire stone base is dense, stable, and uniformly supportive. The goal is to build up the base to the desired thickness for the patio, which typically involves several lifts.

Goal: Create a dense, stable, and level crushed stone base for the patio pavers.

Tools and materials

  • Crushed Stone — Forming the stable base layer for the patio
  • Diesel-powered Compactor — Compacting each layer of crushed stone to create a dense and stable foundation
  • Spreader or Shovel — Distributing the crushed stone evenly over the filter fabric
