PART 4: How to build a 2-tier retaining wall. #hardscape #retainingwall #howto

What happens here

After the lower tier of the retaining wall is constructed and the initial layers of the upper tier are set, the process of installing geogrid and backfilling begins for the upper section. For each subsequent course of retaining wall blocks placed for the upper tier, a layer of geogrid must be laid. Position the geogrid behind the newly laid blocks, ensuring it extends into the backfill area as per engineering specifications (typically, extending a distance equal to the height of the wall section being reinforced, or more). Once the geogrid is in place, backfill the area behind the blocks and on top of the geogrid with granular material. This granular backfill should be compacted in lifts (layers) to achieve proper density and stability. This sequential process of laying blocks, installing geogrid, and backfilling with compaction is repeated until the desired height for the upper retaining wall is achieved.

Goal: Reinforce and stabilize the upper retaining wall through sequential geogrid and backfill placement.

Tools and materials

  • Compactor — Compacting the granular backfill material in layers to achieve optimal density and reduce settling
  • Geogrid — Soil reinforcement to enhance the stability and load-bearing capacity of the retaining wall system
  • Granular Backfill Material — Filling behind the retaining wall and over the geogrid for drainage, stability, and to transfer loads
  • Retaining Wall Blocks — Building the courses of the upper retaining wall
  • Shovel — Spreading backfill material and general excavation
