Stoney Ridge farmer I am with my buddy Luke from Farm fence Solutions and my other buddy Deuce deuce tell them about your friend's company what's your fence company called Brown Smithson Services I'm out of South Carolina the Midlands low country area nice awesome you guys are going to be building fence today we're building about a mile of fence over the next three days here on the farm it's going to be fun guys let's get busy right yes sir afraid a word I ain't afraid to play afraid to get the job done [Music] times like this if you've missed my freedom I'll tell you this is what you can kiss so guys welcome to the Stony Ridge Farm Channel this is your first time here your 50 millionth time thank you so much for being here this is a first generation Farm here in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina and we got a lot of work to do so right now we're driving the fence line about a month ago we had my buddy Dave Mann come up here from Mann's tractor and fence and he mulched out all of this section of fencing in other words we took a forestry Mulcher and came through here where we're going to be running our fence line what they're doing right now is they my buddy Luke here has a wire and this is going to be our straight edge or our straight line to run straight down through here so we'll only have one turn in this run and basically we're just driving all the way around real quick rough up here it's okay we're leaving enough room property line is right there we're leaving enough room on the outside of the fence so that we can maintain our fence line we can drive our fence line which is something that's super handy and super important okay so we're going to cruise right through here we're gonna irritate Somebody by driving over their wire so we're going to make it hard right right here and this is where the fence line goes down through you'll get some cool drone shots over time here this section of fence will be fencing in this large pasture right here so we're looking at fencing somewhere in a neighborhood of 34 Acres now you'll see from some of the Drone footage that we have some water tanks out here those water tanks are not quite set up yet all of our fencing material has been out here for about a year I knew it was coming and let's talk a little bit about the fencing material that we're going to be using so all fencing material comes from Farm fence Solutions my buddy Luke just an impeccable guy just a great guy honest smart as a whip and can build fence awesome we decided to go with steel post and 1348 12 wire from Farm fence Solutions right here are four rolls we have 14 rolls here so hopefully we have enough to cover this entire job these are the fence posts now let's talk about that guys steel prices fluctuate wood prices fluctuate all these prices fluctuate when you buy steel post you can store them almost indefinitely okay so these were bought about four and a half years ago they were stored here on the farm if they were wood posts they would not be suitable for driving with a post driver and we're using some special post drivers called an EVO okay Pro Tech Evo from Pro Tech USA which is Farm fence Solutions awesome we'll get busy showing you guys some of the techniques and some of the stuff that's going on here I've already driven some of the posts and you can see this is a Monumental undertaking this is a big field right here right around 25 acres in this field and then about 10 acres or so of wooded area the next section is over by the pond [Music] so here's the pasture that we're doing guys and here are the cows you can see we just had a new baby this morning our cow sweetie one of our favorite cows who had trouble giving birth last year had a healthy baby bull this morning super cool very awesome so we're flying over and you can see this will effectively add about another third or maybe a little bit more pasture to the farm so we can expand our cattle operation here by fencing in this area so guys what you need to know there's a little cow ology going on here so your cow ology lesson number one here is we're fencing in the forest so that the cows have a place to go on those hot summer days these cows need a cool shaded place to go on hot summer days and some of our pastures don't have shade so that's why we're fencing in part of the Forest right here the cows will graze in the forest we have to be careful where they graze in the forest because they can get scratched up by brambles and Briars and blackberries so we want to make sure that they have a good safe place to graze and will be intensively grazing this Paddock also this is going to be where the cows spend most of the winter next winter now in case you don't know this is a regenerative Farm here in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and what that means is there's no fertilizer put down there are no chemicals put down here on the land our cows don't get wormed our cows don't get medicated unless they're sick so if you want something pure something good we move our cows every single day sometimes twice a day in the summertime and they never have to graze beside their own manure which cuts down on parasites and worms so we don't have to worm our cattle because we move them so frequently guys hit that like button we'd love to have you back subscribe to the channel and check out another Stony Ridge Farm video at the end of this video there'll be links to other fencing videos here on the farm and all kinds of fun stuff as we build this first generation Farm so guys what's going on now is we're laying out posts about every 25 feet these are two and a half inch line posts they'll be driven about 25 feet apart depending on the lay of the land so when folks ask you how much does a fence cost per foot or how much does it cost to fence in 50 acres well it just depends on your land so if you've got nice straight smooth flat land without rocks it's not that bad if you've got land that's going like this right here it's full of rocks it is bad okay this is a four inch post this is a turn post right here and this turn post will serve to keep the line straight from here to the next turn post so it comes right up through here goes to there and then it goes right down to the corner pretty cool [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] guys welcome back to the farm we are on day two of this fencing project right here so we got Ryan gray here with cowboy construction Eastern Washington he's tying up these termination knots right here this is called a termination knot we don't use crimps or anything like that or gripples we use termination knots to tie up our fence I'll show you guys real quick how he ties one all these knots need to be evenly spaced [Music] some folks that build Farm fence will just tie it around a post and wrap it about six times that is inadequate fencing watch this little trick right here bend it over snap it right off no sharp edge right here guys that's what it's all about awesome man thanks for doing a great job so we're down in what I would call a swag in a Valley area right here and the post kind of Crews up this hill this is near a creek bottom and the soil is very Sandy okay so it's a softer soil what has to happen here is feet have to be welded onto these posts and I put this dirt in right here so it's not really compacted it's not native soil so what we've got to do is drive in these feet right here and that's what Luke's welding up right now I'll show you how it works so we're pretty level here pretty level sloping down the hill sloping down the hill and then we're down here to the foot so this foot is welded in place it is a steel pipe that's driven at an angle and then welded in place right here to keep this post from heaving you have to think about this this wire is pulled extremely tight okay if you pull the wire really tight it will heave the post up out of the ground kind of like a bow and arrow so that one has a foot on it and then Mr Loop from Farm fence Solutions has just driven this and welded that foot in place right there it's subgrade so we will never have to worry about it and we'll never have to worry about hitting anything and that will prevent this post from heaving up out of the ground yeah Josh everything was great there except for that's not a foot that's a tie down so the the difference is a tie down we're going to drive a post in at an angle and we can do this with a wood post as well where we would Bridle that with heavy wire then tap it on down it stops this vertical post from moving with pipe we weld that a foot would be a small piece of material we would drill a hole drive it down in that would have a wire attached to it and then we would set that foot so with up pressure and you cut a duckbill on your foot the foot sets this way then you can attach it to your post and it also stops the uplift so this is called again a tie down a tie down okay my bad terminology lesson number one for you guys and for me I don't get it right every time right right check [Music] foreign let's talk about tools that are being used in this video guys this is called a Pro-Tech Evo this is a revolutionary fence building machine it's a track dedicated fence building machine and it's a post driver so let's walk around it really quickly here you can see we've got a stretcher bar here we've got the wire right here where it just rolls it right off and all we have to do set the wire on there and go right down the line here and stretch the wire very very simple very easy very economical this is the post driver portion right here huge heavy weight drives these posts in the reason we went with steel posts is because they're going to last forever this thing drives steel posts through the soil just like butter now you can see this has three spikes on it that's for setting on the top of a wood post to drive it we're not driving any posts with this machine today we're just pulling wire with it pretty cool day one this machine was pounding post all day long again that's called the Pro Tech Evo from Farm fence Solutions this is called a strain right net board or stretcher bar and that uses a wedge to drive these two pieces together to pinch this wire so that it pulls it back and stretches and we're using two chain strainers to pull this tight we'll tie off to that post and make the next run Guys these are specially designed fence tie to hold the wire to the Post specially designed Chuck on this uh drill cows are excited about the new fence these guys are tying this up right here we've got a dip that we're having to negotiate as you can see this is a pretty steep uh Hillside it goes down into a dip and then it heads back up what that does as we talked about a little bit earlier is make these posts and this wire into a big bow and arrow or slingshot okay so we got to think about that as we work through this and they're slowly bringing the wire down so they'll take the skid loader right here and the stretcher bar and they'll pull down on there that's their test dummy to see if it's sling shots but they'll pull down with the skid steer pull the wire down and then tie off as they go down so pretty cool little setup right here that's how that's done in order to get the wire down in a dip like this now the farm is a pretty hilly place and we've had a lot of situations just like this in the past and it works out super good to just pull the net wire down and we've had it as high as six feet high in the past just pull it down tie it off rock and roll day three two months later wow really two months later so I'm in the Honda side by side right now zipping down the hill here these guys are back to building fence but we had a huge setback the setback was one of the post drivers for the local contractor all the rest of the guys had to go back to their prospective homes but one of the post drivers for the contractor that lives the closest actually hit the bottom of a bridge and broke the driver so we had to regroup and reconfigure what we're going to do for the driver on these next posts so we've got about 25 posts to drive you'll get some time lapse of that and then they'll start stretching fence wire so today is Friday the boys will be working all day today hopefully I'll get some wire pulled we'll get all these posts driven in the ground you'll get some cool time lapse of that and we'll start tying up wire on the back side here the goal is to move the cows in this section of pasture by next Wednesday that's it and the past year needs to be grazed really bad I've held off on mowing it for quite some time let's ride down through here and give you a little definition of where we're driving post and we're using an ideal post driver right now on the front of a skid steer where we were using the Pro-Tech Evo from Farm fence Solutions great tool awesome fence building machine this fence building machine is not quite as efficient it's not the Mack Daddy it's not the Lamborghini of fence building machines but it'll get the job done and we can get these cows in here that's the main thing we got 35 Acres over here to graze we've got 50 cows and they're really pushing our pastures this year we've had a nice wet year thank goodness or I'd be feeding hay right now so let's check these guys out all our posts are laid out right here these are the marks we're putting post spacing at about 25 feet we've got a post with a brace right here because we're rounding a corner so it goes Boop and then turns up and goes up that direction and the guys are already down here with a post driver working this is the ideal driver Bobcat 740. how's it going dude hey how you doing man good to see you man what have you been up to this morning uh working okay amazing we've been at it so this is Josh Josh is with Jessup Ranch Josh and Josh that's it you're driving these posts to what 55 inches yep is that right and we are putting insulators on the tops of these just so you know wires on the outside of this fence right here all the way up through yes sir and you guys just have a few to drill in right oh yeah oh that's 22 posts 22. that's it that's it no problem [Music] thank you folks these guys have been working their butts off if not for the Evo getting the mass knocked off of it they wouldn't have to fool with all this stuff they had to really think outside the box to get this job done oh man we don't do it right because we do it twice anymore that's right we do it right once well completion after three months completion yeah oh man dude that Sebring I can't thank you guys enough all three of you guys for working so super hard man Sebring took the time out of his regular schedule just to come down here and knock this out and get it finished I only wish that Luke Gibson could be here from Farm fence Solutions we had Deuce Brown from Brown's fence I'll have links to all these other guys that participated um Brian sloot from Sloop fence Ryan Gray from Cowboy construction out in Tacoma Washington didn't it yep I think so yep Eastern Washington so guys we pulled together an awesome crew for this Jessup Branch fence out here in North Carolina saved the day finished the job all the rest of the guys are all over the country and we just couldn't get all of us together at the same time they're all fencing just not all in the same place that's it man so you guys will get some awesome footage we're gonna put the cows in here in about two or three days so maybe get some footage at the end of this of putting the cows in the fence turned out fantastic as you guys know if you follow the channel we tied all the fence wire all the way up here but we haven't tied this yet we still got to tie these runs and we've got a little bit more work and you'll see me doing that in a future video here on the Stoney Ridge Farm so guys we got one thing to say after all this hard work [Music] thanks a lot for watching guys we built 3 477 feet of pipe fence for this project this is fencing in 26.3 acres I thought it was 35 I measured it on GIS last night and the cows are gonna love it this is going to expand our operation we'll have more animals more beef for you we'll see in the next Stony Ridge Farm video guys thanks a lot [Music] what's that a Terry twister in fact drink milk if you get Gabby sick don't worry about the cancer kids unpasteurized milk sucks galvi sick right out of you guys if you don't know you can't well galvanized without a proper respirator or you will get sick not you might get sick and if you're stupid enough to weld it without a respirator shame on you your grandkids aren't going to like that because they're going to be rolling you around in a wheelchair ask us how enough because now we know what we're doing is getting sawdust in our shoes and we're not even building wood fence it has spider web on my finger
