Off-Grid Septic System: My Secret to No More Sewer Bills!

What happens here

Connect the French drain sections to the outlet pipe of the installed septic tank. Ensure the connections are secure and maintain the correct 1/8 inch per foot downward pitch away from the tank. Backfill the trenches and around the tank with the excavated dirt, carefully compacting it to remove any air pockets and provide stable support. As you backfill, continue to add water to the tank and to the backfill area to further compact the soil and prevent future settling. Finally, cover the entire system, ensuring only the cleanout caps are accessible for future maintenance.

Goal: Connect the drain field, backfill the entire system, and ensure proper compaction.

Tools and materials

  • French Drain NDS — Connecting to the septic tank outlet for wastewater dispersion
  • Garden Hose — Adding water to the tank and backfill for compaction
  • Kubota Mini-Excavator Kubota — Backfilling the trenches and around the tank
  • Shovel — Compacting soil and fine-tuning backfill
  • Dirt — Backfilling the tank and trenches
  • Water N/A — Compacting backfill and flushing air pockets
