What happens here
This project demonstrates the setup and operation of a Greg Judy Bale Unroller, pulled by an ATV, for distributing hay across pastures. While not directly focusing on cooling systems, the efficient operation and proper maintenance of the ATV and its attachments, including monitoring for potential overheating under load, are crucial for successful and sustainable agricultural practices. The process showcases how mechanical equipment is handled for prolonged use in demanding environments.

(15,766 characters)you've got to have biologic material in your soil in order for stuff to grow and we don't want to hit it with a chemical we want to hit it with nature hey there folks this is josh stoneyridge farmer welcome back to another beautiful day here on the stoney ridge farm we're out on the hay yard the hay yard that you probably haven't seen on the videos yet because it's new we just had some hay delivered out here we're going to take the atv that we outfitted in videos past and we're going to be hooking up to the greg judy bale unroller today we're going to show you guys and talk to you guys about regenerative ranching feeding your land feeding your cattle in a different way than you've probably ever seen before we're also going to take that greg judy balin roller we're going to go down and get a garbage roll an absolute garbage nasty composted roll of hay and we're gonna roll it out on the land too it's all about building soil building the land and getting that good butt fertilizer that we like so much to come out of those cows so come along today as we teach you from a to z top to bottom how the greg judy balon roller works and how it works to restore your land all right i ain't free to work i ain't afraid of play i ain't afraid to get the job done [Music] if you mess with my freedom i'll tell you just what you can kiss i tried all right guys so this is the hay yard we bought 51 bales for this year that's about all the hay that we'll have to feed unless we get into some really really icy weather and we do have a good resource for hay i pay 25 a roll for hay here locally but they're not great big bales they're not the biggest heaviest bales okay so greg judy's out there spreading 1100 1200 pound net wrap bales these are probably somewhere in the neighborhood of seven to eight hundred six to eight hundred pound string wrap bales and these don't have sizzle twine they have the poly twine so we gotta make sure we get our twine out from our bale before the cows go to eating on it okay so what we're gonna be doing we've got the greg judy bailin roller all set up right here and i'm going to show you from top to bottom how this critter works we're going to hook it to the four-wheeler and we're going to put it into action and the whole reason we purchased atvs here on the farm is to have a lighter lower footprint on the land during the wet season and they're super handy to have so this is a greg judy balin roller it's manufactured by reject ranch manufacturing in missouri greg is a great friend of mine greg taught me so much even though i only had a one day visit with greg this year he taught me so much about regenerative ranching if you don't follow greg judy's channel check it out i'll post a link at the end of this video and you can just click it and go over and check out greg's ranching operation he's running 300 and something head of cattle over about 14 to 1600 acres it all changes it's always a constant change so even on our farm it's a constant change so this is the great judy bailon roller it is a very very well balanced two fingers right here boom very very well balanced machine okay this thing will pick up a hay bale and what we're going to do first of all is attach it to the atv so i'm going to roll it on up here and we'll get hooked up with two fingers i can pick it up okay we're going to lay it up here on the ball and this is a two inch ball here on the back of our atv we'll post a link if you guys don't have one of these setups this is a curt manufacturing setup on the back of the atv which brings the ball back about that far to get it out from under this coping rack right here so you have a safety chain right here if you're going to haul it down the road i totally suggest you use the safety chain for this video i'm leaving the safety chain up because i'm not really worried about if it rolls off down the hill it's just going to get hung in the fence i'm not worried about that if you're going down the road which you could use this to haul hay all over the place check with your local municipality see if it's legal for you to do that okay now we'll talk about what this does and how it all works in the back let me apologize to you because you're going to have some shadows the sun is low in the sky right now it's always low in the sky this time of year so what we've got here is the bail and roller itself has a hand crank with a strap right here okay you release a little flip switch right here and you can lower your strap or you can raise it up and what we want to do is we want to get these pins lined up with the center of the hay bale and i want to show you all this before we put it in a hay bale just so you know how it all operates so again to raise and lower all you do is you release tension you flip this little switch and that lowers it down okay flip it back locks it into place flip that switch again and you can jack it up you can actually leave that switch where it is and it just winds up just like that this is strap material much like seat belt material i'm going to tell you something how many of you guys been to a junk yard have you ever seen a seat belt fray and break no matter how much sunshine or how much sun damage you take that strap's easy to replace if it does have to be replaced but it's going to last for years and years this critter is a lifetime purchase okay so that's how that works we're going to crank it up and what we're doing by cranking it up is raising these arms so we'll lower it down a little bit see how that lowers that arm and raises that arm i have a wingspan of about six foot six inches so this will take a huge bale and what you got to do is you'll back up right into your bale you'll find the center of your bale and you'll push these spikes right here into the bale just like so okay now the end of the spike is in the bail we'll get you a little close-up of that here's your bale spear okay you just push that into your bail right there's the tip of it can't hardly see it but this will get shiny once it's used a few times okay i'm gonna push that guy out just like so now here's something of note underneath here you see that that's for riding along the ground okay so this will not dig down into the mud or catch a stump as this thing is slid forward here it has the potential of catching something like a rock or a stump and that would bend this apparatus greg thought this through and i built this slide right here this slide slides along the ground so that you don't accidentally catch a stump with your spike so we'll slide both spikes out just like so and you don't have to worry about them dropping out the end there's a chain that retains them we want it to line up with the center of the bale as best as possible this one is kind of twisted a little bit the bale is a little bit on the light side so i'll rock it just a slight bit and we're actually going to lower this down so it fits right in the center of the [Music] bale and we're gonna drive this spike in you could take a rubber mallet with you if you wanted to but that spike goes right into the bale no problem we're gonna drive the next spike in pretty similar actually oh need to rock that bale there we go rock it just a little bit it doesn't have to be dead center it doesn't matter okay put that guy on then we've got a chain here that will loop over a hook on both sides a little close-up of the chain there's a hook right here you just lay it into place just like so and you don't have to worry about this coming out of the bale it's stuck so it's in the bale and we're almost ready to go you can't just take off we got to raise the bale up okay and that's where this balance comes into play and that's where the ultralight footprint of the atv and the greg judy bailin roller really comes into play so let's crank up the bale and we'll get it off the ground it ain't rocket science the cows are getting excited they know what's coming so now our bale is only off the ground probably about that far about six inches something like that if we were going to transport this bale way across the farm then we'd go ahead and jack this thing all the way up to the termination point there's a spot where it ends we'll just raise it all the way up and tote it across the farm that's what we're going to do with the old crusty bale that we're gonna do last so stick around so you can see how smooth a new bale comes off and how smooth an old crusty bail comes off we're gonna take you up here in the pasture and we're gonna show you where we're rolling this out to rebuild the soil so again guys we're on a honda foreman 500 and we're just cruising nice and easy we're not racing anything and that's the bale back there it's just toting it right along and the girls are hungry they know what's coming here so we got an area of bad soil up here i'll show you or no soil really they're all coming running okay girls got to get back got to get back let me let me get don't you eat no plastic okay so all i'm doing here is i'm cutting all the string off the bale this was a net wrap this would be so much easier probably be a bigger better bale than a higher quality a higher quality hay now cows will tear anything up they can get their feet mouths or behinds on so the science behind this also is trying to keep this away from our fences because we want uh low impact on our fences guys so part of the science here so i cut all the strings we're gonna roll the strings off the bale real quick get a good wrap here the bale doesn't have to roll just the string has to come loose okay always take your string put it in a safe place double check just like this here's another string right there okay pull that guy out good deal put this in a safe place cows like chewing plastic close one i just pulled this string right out of that cow's mouth so if you can do this outside the pasture without making a mess like in your gravel driveway like i have it's a good idea i'm gonna rock this back release my switch and lower the bale down just like so controlled well controlled don't just let it go okay gonna keep on letting it go just let it kind of swing just like that right there now be careful you gotta watch don't let that catch on a stick or a twig or something keep pulling out but you can see that spring-loaded portion that i was talking about puts constant pressure on the ground with this critter it's going to be nearly impossible for me to film this without the cows running over everything so let's see how it goes [Music] okay so that's it it just unrolls the bale all over everywhere so the cows aren't all bunched up around a bale you just dumped off in the pasture what this is doing is taking this land which has very very poor soil quality as you can see around this tree there just simply is no grass so we'll roll this out and if your cows start developing cow trails out in the pasture in the wintertime when it's really wet outside or even in the summertime you can roll this out on the cow trails and it'll help those cows to press down all the hay and debris they won't eat all that and that is a seed bank right there to put that good fescue and clover seed on there there's a little timothy in there all sorts of hay all through here and this hillside will flourish next year so that's what it's all about let's grab this thing we're going to crank it back up i'll show you exactly what we do for transport and we're going to go down and we're going to get that ugly nasty hay bale up we go to a safe position to pull down to the other side of the farm now i left the gate open the cows won't run out the gate because they know it's supper time just like i showed you before we're gonna stab this guy through we're not quite at the level i need to be so i'm actually going to lower it down just a hair get right in the center of that bale these are old hay bales that i bought they were old hay bales last year so these are several years old perfect compost for rolling out on the land okay again we're gonna take our spike drive it right in there sometimes it's a little harder than that so be prepared you might have to take a rubber mallet and smack that guy we've got our bale here once again we're gonna crank it up this is a rontio bale this is a composted bale pretty much but down in the middle of that bale is some good hay and the cows will eat that hay it's not very high in nutritive value however they will nibble on it a little bit and what we're looking for is for them to pack this old crusty hay down in the ground as compost we want places like this see the dead land grandpa called it dead land they're red dirt there's red dirt up there there's dead land right in here so let's head on up the hill with this guy the cows will eat some of it but a lot of it will get trampled into the land with the hooves and it's still got grass seed in it man so it's gonna help that grass grow back there's the old swamp donkey peekaboo what was that what was that thing always something fun going on here on the stoney ridge there's mater made her the old dump truck all of our hay bales are set out like this on purpose so we can easily access them with the greg judy bailin roller that's the susie this is susie susie's my sweetie susie likes to be rubbed right there or she likes me leave her alone everywhere i step there's a manure patty good for the field bad for the shoes man all right so i'm checking this bale right here because it it's old it could have some string that i don't see so i've gotta really check it good make sure i'm not getting any strength because these cows again they'll chew on plastic this is bad bad stuff to get in the stomach of a cow you don't want a vet bill or have to put a cow down because you didn't pick up your string so do your due diligence and make sure you get all your string up and also be careful not to cut your microphone cable with your knife done that before too all right so looks like we've got all the string out and if you look underneath that old black hay is some good decent hay okay so there's orchard grass in there it's some decent hay right in here but just a layer of nasty nasty blackness okay that's good hay that's good hay right there just fine we bought this at the end of the year last year for 20 bucks a bale delivered building soil that's what it's about let's take off with this one that's it guys that's the greg judy bailin roller i'm not here to sell you one you can go to green pastures farm and check them out i'll post a link down the video description to the greg judy balon roller i'm not sure because the prices of steel fluctuate so the prices of the bail and roller fluctuate a little bit so you'll have to get up with greg if you want to get one for your own farm you can pull it with a truck it's a two inch ball you pull with a truck with a tractor with a utv with an atv whatever you want to do we're using atvs because we want low footprint on our land and we want to feed our land so we're buying hay and putting carbon down on our farm so we can bring back the earthworms and not poison them with chemical fertilizer that's the fertilizer we want to poison it with these right here cow pies good stuff guys we'll see you next time on the stoney ridge farm please pound that like button jump in subscribe the channel i'd love to have you back all the way it's right to be stony red [Music] hey there folks this is josh stoney rich farmer welcome back to farmer what we've got to do is we've got to feed the cows some hay we have a greg judy hey there folks this is josh stoney ridge farmer welcome back from our yeah so we're gonna do i got a booger we were out in missouri and got a chance to visit greg i saw this bailing on roller and did
