No boulder is getting in our way! Just whip out the scribe!

What happens here

Begin by placing a paver roughly in position next to the irregular landscape feature, such as a large natural rock. It will be immediately apparent that a standard rectangular paver will not fit snugly. To overcome this, grab a contour gauge and carefully press its pins against the irregular edge of the rock. Ensure the gauge is firmly pressed to accurately capture the profile. Once the shape is captured, transfer this exact profile onto the paver using a pencil or marker, drawing the cut line. Additionally, use a tape measure to determine the required depth of the cut based on the contour gauge's impression against the paver.

Goal: Obtain the precise shape of the irregular edge for cutting the paver.

Tools and materials

  • Contour Gauge — To precisely replicate and capture the irregular shape of the natural rock's edge
  • Paver — The paving stone that needs to be custom-cut to fit the irregular edge
  • Pencil / Marker — For accurately marking the cut lines on the paver based on the contour gauge
  • Rubber Mallet — To gently tap and adjust pavers into position during initial placement
  • Tape Measure — To measure the depth of the required cut on the paver
