Debris Composting and Topsoil Generation

Next Major Project Begins! Clearing more land for Pasture and Hay Fields!
What happens here
Building upon the initial clearing, the project now focuses on strategically managing the accumulated debris. The presenter explains that these debris piles, remnants from earlier clearing of a 'cutover' forest (timbered land), have been left to compost for 5-7 years. This natural decomposition process, aided by periodically turning the piles with an excavator to shake out soil and aerate the material, transforms the organic waste into rich topsoil. The video shows the track loader actively pushing and sorting these piles, separating the valuable, nutrient-rich black topsoil from the remaining organic material, which is then pushed to the forest edge. This process contrasts the healthy, composted soil with the naturally sandy native soil found on the property.
Goal: Transform 'cutover' forest debris into valuable topsoil and consolidate remaining organic matter.
Tools and materials
- Excavator John Deere — Turning and aerating debris piles for composting and soil separation
- Composted Topsoil — Enriched soil produced through decomposition, used to improve fields
- Native Soil — Existing soil on the property, to be mixed with composted material
- Organic Debris — Source material for composting and topsoil generation
