Manual Trenching for Gas Main and Utilities
At 0:15 in
Navigating pool lines like land mines. #hardscape #outdoorkitchen
What happens here
Due to the presence of numerous existing pool lines running directly through the construction area, machine excavation is not possible without risking severe damage. Therefore, all subsequent digging for utility trenches, specifically for the gas main, must be performed by hand. This involves painstakingly digging deep, narrow trenches using shovels, carefully working around the hidden pool lines. The trenches need to be deep enough to accommodate the gas main line according to local building codes, which can be physically demanding as workers are shown digging 'butt-deep' to achieve the required depth. The gas main line is being extended from the main house connection to the outdoor kitchen area.
Goal: Manually excavate deep trenches for the gas main line while avoiding existing underground infrastructure like pool lines.
Tools and materials
- Pickaxe — Breaking up compacted soil or small rocks during manual excavation
- Safety Glasses — Protecting eyes from flying debris
- Safety Gloves — Protecting hands during manual labor
- Shovels — Manually digging deep trenches for utility lines
- Gas Main Line Pipe — Providing gas supply to the outdoor kitchen appliances
