What happens here

After all pavers are laid, the final steps involve compacting the entire surface and filling the joints. Run a plate compactor over the finished paver surface to settle the pavers evenly into the bedding sand. Then, sweep polymeric sand into all the paver joints. This sand, once activated with water, hardens to lock the pavers in place, prevent weed growth, and deter insect infestations. Finally, ensure the entire area is clean and ready for use.

Goal: Secure the pavers in place, fill the joints, and clean the patio for final use.

Tools and materials

  • Garden Hose with Sprayer — Activating the polymeric sand with a fine mist of water
  • Leaf Blower — Removing excess polymeric sand from the paver surface before watering
  • Plate Compactor — Final compaction of the laid pavers
  • Push Broom — Sweeping polymeric sand into paver joints
  • Polymeric Sand — Filling and hardening paver joints
