What happens here
This DIY project demonstrates how to refinish wooden kitchen countertops by removing old, failed epoxy and applying a new, durable, and glossy clear epoxy coat. The process involves extensive scraping of the old coating, meticulous mixing and application of new epoxy resin, and techniques to ensure a bubble-free, even finish.

(11,716 characters)We can't wet sand it. No, cuz we want to finish it and get it done so we can have the kitchen back as a kitchen. So, we're dry sanding because if we wet sand it, what'll happen is the moisture go into the wood. Hot wood will take days, won't it? Yeah. It'll dry. It'll take days for it to dry and we don't want that. So, we're doing it the oldfashioned way. Elbow grease. Someone likes Now check this out. Frankie, will we show them what we got cooking? That's what we're dealing with separation. And we wouldn't have had to really I mean it probably would have stayed if this would have happened. You know this. So we got Do you So we had some water penetration here. Yeah. and that we lost the front edge. I just don't know why we would continue to lose way over here, but we have no water penetration over here. I don't think it just I don't It just didn't bond. Didn't bond right. I mean, so we're going to sand it all. We're going to take it all down. The only problem is we got to go around this corner here cuz we can't stop it right there. That makes no sense. Right. So everything would match. I think if we don't do it, this is going to continue to pull up somewhere. Yeah, it's going to eventually have to keep coming up. Once it gets air underneath there, you're going to see a big You're going to see that. It's just going to keep coming up. How long ago did we do this, Frankie? Like me and Will were just talking. It has to be say four 12 14 years ago, I bet you. No. I'll bet you it was close. I've been out for I We didn't do this before. We did this before I went in. Really? Yep. How long were you in for? Four. And we've been out I've been out now for six, seven, six. Yeah, it's been a while. So that would be 10. So that'd be prior to that, you know, you know, before we actually did it. Damn, we're getting old. Frankie, that's what I mean. It's It's been a while. It doesn't seem like it, but it has. It actually It's been a while. Have you guys been with us that long? How many adventures have you How many adventures have you gone on with us? Oh, man. Always something, though. We never have a dull moment. No. I don't think we've ever been like, "Hey, we're bored. What should we do?" I know. We're always like, "Damn, what how many hours are there in a day?" Frankie and I are trying to figure out our retirement plans. We don't have to bust butt our entire rest of our lives. So, if you guys have a good retirement plan, let us know. Yeah, cuz we'll take any suggestions you got and YouTube ain't cutting it. It's just not worth it. All right. Well, I'll set up a time lapse and let you have some fun. Let me go get See any place there's a crack? It goes in there and that's tough to get out. They pulled some of the wood out there, but that it won't leak through, so it'll it'll still be good. But this one did not last as long as our other one, but our other countertop Oh, the other one. That was the old That was the old one. No, these. Oh, these these haven't I was told this would never last. Well, you got some bubbling and stuff, but Oh, it's not perfect, but it hasn't. Yeah, it lasted. It hasn't failed because what I did is I went right over the bark and I was told that that would never hold up. It actually helped keep the bark on. Right. It did. Yeah. Cuz the bark otherwise would been gone. [Music] He [Music] You know, earlier in the video I said YouTube isn't cutting it anymore. Well, that's because I did it to myself. I had a couple options. I could speak the truth knowing that it could very likely get my channel penalized. And that is absolutely what has happened. and I was willing to take that chance. My average video views in the past were around 181,000. I've now released videos that don't get over 5,000 views. And that's not because I've changed anything with how I make those videos. It's because the algorithm knew that I was starting to speak the truth, even though it was unpopular and goes against the very platform that I'm on. But if you want to support us, the best way to do that and support small business owners is over at the Dirt Monkey Shop. At the Dirt Monkey Shop, we've teamed up with hundreds of inventors from across the nation that have the coolest things possible, but they don't know how to market it and created one safe and secure environment for you guys to go and buy your merchandise from. That's the best way you can support us. Buy a hat, buy a t-shirt, enter one of our giveaways. We're giving away mowers, tools. We're giving away trucks, trailers. We're giving away a lot of things over there because we want our dream not to just be for us. If we can do something where we give something away and it builds somebody else's dream, a rising tide raises all ships. Or if we're doing something at the dirt monkey shop and it helps an inventor, to become discovered, to take their invention to the next level, a rising tide raises all ships. And if you go over there and find something cool and it helps you out, then again, we've won. We've won. We've won. And if we don't cowtail and shut up and self censor, we've also won. When we lose is when we let other people control our destiny. When we lose is when we don't fight united. Stay together. If you are one of my audience and you've appreciated the videos that I've done in the past, go over and support us at the Dirt Monkey Shop. It's our mission and we're trying to bring you into it and make it bigger and better than ever. Now, let's jump back into the video. I'll come back and paint the sides and whatever I Okay. Where do you want me to start pouring here? Where do you want? I suppose we start just start a little bit here and I'll just keep pushing it and then as I run out then you can add more. All right. You need more? Yeah. I'm going to just a little bit here. Oh, right there. We got double. So, we we need more. We'll just use it. Right. Okay. That's good. When When you saw that video that they said they need 1 oz per square foot. Was that for countertops? That might No, that might have been something else, too. But Oh, okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. That makes sense. Then that's all right cuz while you're doing that, I can always mix up the next batch. The product we're using is called Stone Coat Countertop and it is far superior than any other product we've used and we've used used it tons of times and never had a fail yet. It the original product that we put on this was not stone coat countertop and of course we had issues with it and stone coat seems to be one of those products that just works over and over again. And this is not a paid endorsement. They don't know I'm making this and saying this. And I bought this off from the internet just like you guys would stone coat countertops. That's what we're using. Oh, there we go. [Music] There's two ways the pop bubbles. One is with a torch. The second one is with a heat gun. Don't use a heat gun. It blows too much air, moves the product around too much and dust and dust. And the torch is perfect cuz it just pops them. And you can see Frankie is not getting close. And Nikki's looking for any dry spots cuz once the product sets up, it's too late. You can't go back and touch up spots. It doesn't work. Jim, they're pretty much doing the whole process again. Yeah. Yeah. You basically Yeah. You start all over. You like the entire pore and the entire countertop. You can't go back after the fact and if you're a little low in a spot, fill that in. That nope. You start all over again. So, this is where it's real critical to do your due diligence and make sure you're okay with the product cuz this wood will soak this product in. So, it looks good one time and then later on you're like, "How is there a dry spot there? I brush that 53 times." That's what happens. All good on this side. I'll get out of your way. No, you're fine. on here. We got a torch. You win. And the product we're using is called Stone Cold Countertops. We've used this many times and absolutely the best product we've used. You don't get any special discounts if you mention the Dirt Monkey sent you. We don't get nothing. It's just what we use. And I don't think I'd use anything else. Would you use anything else, Frankie? This seemed to be about the best. We've tried a few. Yeah, we've tried. Yeah. This by far, I think, the best. We've never had a failure yet with this product. Whatever you guys did the first time. I don't know what that was. That was that flame wood. Yeah, it was a different product. And I can't blame the product entirely. No. No. Cuz that was our first time of doing that big of a pore. I think the wood was uh not quite completely dry either. Yeah. So the wood itself has to be completely dry because as that water is coming up, the seal on the top of it doesn't allow it to escape and then it just separates. That's why we can peel it off so easy. Can you put the light over here? It's too dark over here. I can't see. [Music] All right. So, when it comes to certain parts of the job, I've learned that if I don't ever want to be criticized year after year for screwing something up, I let her do it. Like, oh my god, why did you miss this entire spot on this counter? Why did you? So I get her involved to doublech checkck everything and then if there is something wrong it doesn't fall on my shoulders falls on both of our shoulders. We split it. That's just a lesson in husbandry from one husband. If you're a new husband, you haven't lived with the wife yet for a while. That's just a strategy. show you her truck. Yeah, you got a cool truck. She's obsessed with she want I told her she wanted to show you. Uh, that's good. You don't need to grab my cat. You have a truck. You have a truck. See a truck. Play with your truck. All right. We are on pour number two on this. And I want to just break this down for you. If if you can see it. I don't know if the camera is going to pick it up. There's two different sheen. Super glossy and this not quite so glossy. So, we want it all equal. And we have two different time frames that we can do the second pour. The first time frame is within the 4 to 6 hours from the initial pour. And that creates what's called a chemical bond. And that's the strongest bond. Let's hope that chat GPT is right when it tells me this stuff. The second time that we can do it is after it's hardened. That would be 24 hours later. But then we have to scuff everything down, sand it down. And I've done this before. Scuff it, sand it, repour it, and that creates a mechanical bond. It's not as strong as a chemical bond, but it's still better than nothing. And a second pour, my opinion has always been it just makes it that much better. It really does. It you think it would gloss you can see better. Yeah. mirror look or window look or whatever. It does make a difference. I think it's just a better looking end product, especially when it's noticeable. So, we're going to do the second pour right now. [Music] Second coat went on better than we hoped. I I don't think the camera is going to pick this up at all, but let's just go over this and show you. She's still wet, but we got rid of all the dry spots. And if we come right down and we use that sunlight, we can see we've got no bubbles. We've got no grain, nothing. She's just smooth. Well, that's going to call it for this one. All that's left for me to do is clean up and wrap up and probably won't hopefully I won't have to redo this one ever. I hope whatever you guys are working on turns out excellent. But as always, God bless and go get them, you guys. We'll see you on another one. This one is Dot. Daughters from live across the street from us. I got to pick some stuff up from Walmart.
