What happens here
Remove any existing concrete or patio material from the designated area. After demolition, excavate the soil to the required depth, typically 8 to 12 inches, to accommodate the new paver base. Lay down a layer of geotextile fabric (landscape fabric) to prevent the base material from mixing with the subsoil. Then, apply a substantial layer of compacted crushed stone or gravel (typically 6-8 inches thick), spreading it evenly. Use a vibratory plate compactor to thoroughly compact the base material in multiple passes, ensuring a stable and level foundation for the pavers. The video shows workers using a plate compactor on the already laid base.
Goal: Prepare a stable and level sub-base for the paver patio.
Tools and materials
- Excavator/Bobcat — Large-scale excavation and concrete removal (implied)
- Rakes — Leveling base material
- Shovels — Excavating soil and spreading base material
- Sledgehammer/Jackhammer — Breaking up old concrete (implied)
- Vibratory Plate Compactor — Compacting the crushed stone base to create a dense and stable foundation
- Wheelbarrow — Transporting excavated material and base stone
- Crushed Stone/Gravel — Creating the primary structural base for the pavers
- Geotextile Fabric — Separating the base material from the native soil to prevent mixing and enhance stability
