What happens here

This is a critical step requiring careful attention to safety. Install the gas line, fire pit pan, and burner. For natural gas, connect to your home's gas supply (often requiring a licensed plumber) or run a new line. For propane, design an enclosure within or next to the fire pit to safely house the propane tank, ensuring adequate ventilation. Securely attach the burner to the fire pit pan, and then place the pan within the fire pit structure. Ensure all gas connections are tightly sealed using appropriate pipe sealant or Teflon tape. Blue flames are achieved through efficient and complete combustion of natural gas or propane, which is primarily dependent on a high-quality burner and proper gas pressure allowing for an optimal air-to-fuel mixture. Some burners are specifically designed to optimize for blue flame appearance.

Goal: Safely and correctly install the gas delivery and ignition system.

Tools and materials

  • Fire Pit Burner
  • Fire Pit Pan — Holding the burner and fire media, and containing the flames
  • Gas Line — Connecting the gas source to the fire pit burner
  • Gas Regulator — Regulating gas pressure from the tank or main line (especially for propane)
  • Gas Shut-off Valve — Providing an emergency cut-off for the gas supply
  • Safety Glasses — Protecting eyes during installation
  • Work Gloves — Protecting hands
  • Wrenches — Tightening gas line fittings and connections
  • Leak Detection Solution — Testing gas connections for leaks (soapy water can also be used)
  • Pipe Sealant — Sealing threaded gas connections to prevent leaks
