What happens here

After installing all the individual light fixtures, the final step is to connect all the low-voltage wiring to a central low-voltage transformer and test the entire lighting system. All wires from different lighting zones (spotlights, hardscape lights, wall lights) should be routed back to the transformer, ensuring waterproof connections. Once connected, plug the transformer into a GFCI-protected outdoor outlet and test each lighting zone to ensure all fixtures are working correctly and the desired illumination levels are achieved. Adjustments to light placement or aiming may be made at this stage.

Goal: Ensure all lights are properly connected and functioning safely.

Tools and materials

  • Cable Burial Tool or Shovel — Neatly burying low-voltage cables in trenches
  • GFCI-Protected Outdoor Outlet — Providing a safe power source for the transformer
  • Low-Voltage Transformer — Converting household voltage to low voltage for the lighting system
  • Voltage Meter — Testing voltage levels and continuity in the wiring
  • Wire Strippers — Stripping insulation from wires for connections to the transformer
  • Electrical Tape — Adding extra insulation and protection to wire connections
  • Waterproof Wire Connectors — Making final secure, waterproof connections to the transformer
