It's So Easy! How to make Shiitake Mushroom Logs!

What happens here

With the logs prepared, the next step is to drill holes for the mushroom plugs. The logs are laid out on a flat surface, such as the back of a Kubota utility vehicle. A cordless drill with a 7/16-inch drill bit is used. To ensure consistent depth, electrical tape is wrapped around the drill bit to mark the desired depth (plug length plus a quarter-inch). Holes are drilled approximately every 6 inches along the logs. Three rows of holes are made per log, rotating the log about a third of the way after each row to create a staggered pattern.

Goal: Create appropriately sized and spaced holes in the logs for mushroom spawn plugs.

so we've got all our shiitake logs laid out here on the back of the Kubota and what we're going to be doing here is inoculating in other words we're gonna knock in those little plugs I just showed you what we're going to use is a 7/16 inch drill bit and we're going to go about every six inches and what I'll do is three rows on each log so one row here rotate it another row and then another row and then we'll knock them in and we'll cover them up with wax we'll seal them off with wax okay now you don't need to worry about washing your hands or anything but you do need to know if you're gonna use different types of mushroom spores only use one type on each log in other words don't mix mushroom spores with different types of logs before we start drilling holes I want to talk to you a little bit about this I've got some electrical tape and I've got my drill bit right here and it comes with instructions on what size drill bit you're gonna need you want your mushroom plugs if I can get them out of this Houdini plastic bag here there we go what you want to do that's a good bag is you want to drill in about as deep as the plug plus a quarter of an inch I'm going to take my plug I see what depth I need to go and I'm going to take some tape and tape around my drill bit just like so so now I know the depth that my drill bit needs to go so I'll have it appropriate for my shiitake plugs then we'll go every six inches or so this isn't an exact science guys just drill okay so we got one row across we'll just rotate it a third of the way over and do it again then we'll rotate it one third over again and do the last side and we want to check make sure just halfway in between there and we'll drill them in now we're all set up to start driving our plugs in to all these individual holes this is the easy part so you just
