It's not supposed to do that?

What happens here

Before beginning, put on safety glasses and gloves. Using a DeWalt cordless angle grinder (or a corded one for sustained power), carefully sharpen each flail hammer. The presenter demonstrates grinding both faces of the hammer to create a sharp edge. He mentions that there are approximately 30 hammers on the rotor. The goal is to remove any dullness and reveal shiny metal on the cutting edges. It's noted that precise balancing of individual hammers is not critical due to the overlapping design, but ensuring each has a good edge is important. A new hammer is shown for comparison to illustrate the target sharpness.

Goal: Resharpen all dull flail hammers to improve cutting efficiency.

Tools and materials

  • 80-Grit Sanding Wheel — The abrasive surface for sharpening the metal hammers
  • Angle Grinder — Provides sustained power for sharpening (used after initial cordless demo)
  • DeWalt Angle Grinder — Sharpening the flail hammers
  • New Flail Hammer Maschio — Visual comparison to demonstrate desired sharpness
  • Safety Glasses — Protecting eyes from sparks and debris
  • Safety Gloves — Protecting hands during grinding
