What happens here
This video documents the process of diagnosing a critical mechanical failure in a New Holland 474 haybine. After routine pre-operation checks, the haybine experienced a catastrophic failure, identified as a fractured transmission casing and a blown-out spline gear, requiring significant repair or replacement.

vlog let me fix my hat first so good lord what happened to my hat there we go it's a little bit better this hat is not for aesthetics by the way this hat is for keeping the Sun out of my eyes and keeping my face from getting sunburned and keeping myself from getting skin cancer because we're working outside on tractors and stuff like this all the time and I don't want to die a skin cancer I don't want to have a chunk taken out of my nose alright it might happen still but at least I tried so guys a piece of equipment here is called a headline it's a new holland 474 habe ein which I believe means it has either a 72 or 74 inch cut so it's either a six or a seven foot hey Mon I didn't measure it I just get out and I work with it and the tractor we're going to be using is a John Deere 50 65 and you've probably seen this in previous videos but we took the loader off so we're going to walk you around the pieces of equipment really quickly talk about it a little bit and then we're going to get busy working pretty fun so guys a tractor we're going to be using today as a John Deere 50 65 it is a three cylinder engine basically a three cylinder turbo diesel engine will shut that up I want to make sure before we start that our grill is nice and clean or fairly clean so we get good airflow got to check our oil check our hydraulic fluid all these things will be in use during this procedure here so our hydraulic lines for the rear hook up right here and they run to the hydraulic cylinder on the back of the hey bond let me walk over here and this raises and lowers the hay bind and it'll make more sense to you here in just a little bit when you see it in action the whole machine drops down to cut the grass and then raises up to get it out of the way so you don't tear it up now inside here are all sorts of gears and grease fittings and stuff like that that we have to address let's open this guy up there's also oil that we have to check inside of here and little fittings that we have to grease we got to make sure we're all topped off on oil that our belt is good but everything's good so that we don't wear this thing out so here's the hydraulic cylinder and back in here are all sorts of little moving parts and you'll see all those parts moving here in just a little bit and then inside this little cabinet right here are a few other things we've got to make sure everything is lubricated the belts good so we don't have break down so we don't tear our equipment up okay right up underneath here is a roller and this will make a little bit more sense to you in a little while to when we get some footage but that roller right there right in the middle is where the grass goes and it crimps it all together it kind of breaks it a little bit so that it dries a little bit better it kind of breaks the outside casing of the grass I guess you could call it and that way it dries out better now right here's a bit of an adjuster so you can have a fluffier pile or a lower pile if any of your tractor guys have any input on this please let me know so walking around the equipment here you got a big old spring right here and some of these bearings are sealed like this guy right here some of these bearings are not sealed so we have to grease some and some we don't have to grease now this is the front apparatus and this thing spins it rotates around and knocks the grass down and pulls it through the machine as these little cutting blades start doing the work now we use this machine last year and when we got done we soaked those cutting blades down with oil so hopefully they'll do just fine we've already fired it up one time this year just to see if everything's going to work right so we've got a few little portals we have to go into right here one in the back and also one right here so we've got belts we've got all sorts of stuff that we got to keep a close eye on and if these things start wearing which that belt is wearing just a little bit we'll start thinking about replacing them we're probably going to run this machine for about six hours today let's talk about the hookups now and hooks up to the PTO shaft it's a 540 PTO and then it goes into this little shaft and then it goes right on down the line to this little thing right here and this thing has a piece of string attached to it so once you get it out in the field you pull this string and this pin retracts and the machine can rotate out to the side of the tractor now let me get out from the tractor and explain this a little bit to you when you pull that little string it allows that hate mind to swing out beside the tractor in other words while you're running over the grass that's really tall than uncut hay while you're running over it you would be matting it down and it would have a lot of trouble cutting it so the Machine swings out to the side so that you don't run over the place that you're getting ready to cut pretty cool now I got to get over here check all my fluids get some lubrication done so the next time you see me we'll be over in the field and I've got a GoPro strapped to the hay mine so you'll get some pretty cool footage hopefully when you shoot that drone up in the air too when we get about halfway through this this is gonna be a two maybe three maybe four day process here so I'm gonna mow for about six hours maybe seven hours today it's about new normal motel dark now for all you folks that said Stoney Ridge farmer isn't a real farmer well you know a farmer is what a farmer wants to be today I want to mow hay tomorrow I might want to run a tiller I might want to play with some chickens that's just part of farming work on that truck whatever have some fun whoo so I do kind of a good visual inspection in here and I'll open up each one of these little caps and check the oil in it and give them a little top-off the next thing we're gonna do is we'll reach back in here and all these little universal joints need to be greased so I really can't show you all that but I'm gonna get in here and just get busy greasing and that's the reason I have these nitrile gloves on guys these are life savers there'll be a link down in the video description if you decide to get a pair they are really really helpful and if you guys didn't know it I'm a registered nurse as a profession so I can't go in with greasy old gross fingers and take care of Grandma I got my tractor got my camera I got my drone I got my habe ein and something went POW rear door on the hay mine blew open and it went clinically and I shut it down as quickly as I possibly could but it's too late let me show you what happened inside this little compartment here this door blew open inside here is the transmission for the hay bind and it just split it just busted wide open right in there it just split wide open all the way across there now this is filled with oil I checked the oil in it I don't know I don't know what's going on really it just blew this out and you can see it just kind of rounded off all these bolts and blew that little spline gear out so I'm assuming I've got to replace this if not replace this whole section right here it just exploded and it beat up back in here look at the other side it just got in there and just beat that thing up really bad and this was running I mean look at that it just that's crazy it was only running 30 seconds and it just boomed just exploded I don't know what that's gonna cost to fix but it just it just sucks so now I've got to figure out where to get the transmission part I guess it's the transmission I don't know exactly what you call it's the only thing that has gear oil in it well there's three compartments in here that have gear oil in it I don't know if that's the transmission or what you call it got to take some pictures and head to the new holland dealership and see if it's worth fixing now my stepdads got two or three four seventy twos and this is a four seventy four so we're going to give him a call he's converted himself over to a disc mower this may be a sign to convert over to a disc more but I think we paid about two thousand bucks for this machine maybe twenty two hundred last year so hopefully this isn't a very expensive little boo-boo and we can get it fixed and get rocking with it I plan on working for about seven or eight hours and now my plan is to chase down parts for the next five hours pretty upbeat guy but that kind of took the wind out of my sails I don't know I like a good challenge though so I guess we'll fix it cool guys thanks a lot for watching the Channel please pound that like button subscribe to the channel maybe we will start a GoFundMe to fix my hey vine we're not gonna do that guys thanks a lot for watching I appreciate your support we'll see you next time on sturdy Ridge Farm hopefully we get this thing fixed and we can get out and do some mowing I hope I need to mow I need to hey I need the hay for the goats I need the hay to roll out on spots that are starting to wash here on the farm where we sowed new grass I need the hay I don't want to mow it down I want I want to cut up hay at least one cut of hay this year I might as well bush hog it and get a fall cutting and repair this so that's my plan mm-hmm sad thanks a lot guys I'll see you next time on Stoney Ridge farmer [Music] I am [Music] all right guys now here's the ultimate test of this light I got my wife in there and she's ready for the signal here comes Wow Wow ultra ultra bright 20% off discount code down below even though the tractor broke still somehow remembered to show you this light check it out so I am somewhere in the neighborhood of hmm 40 feet away now maybe 50 feet away and it lights up pretty much my whole backyard check it out pretty cool now that's a cool day sponsor right there
