What happens here
To maintain the elevated position of the pillar cap, small pieces of 2x4 lumber (or similar sturdy wood blocks) are strategically attached to the main wooden pergola post. These blocks serve as temporary structural supports, securely holding the heavy stone cap in place. This setup facilitates the completion of the pillar's masonry: stonemasons can lay the final courses of natural stone and apply mortar right up to the underside of the elevated cap, building the pillar directly beneath it. This circumvents the need to make precise cuts in the stone cap to fit around the post.
Goal: Create a stable and removable temporary support system for the pillar cap.
