If it aint compacted, get ready for a sinker.

What happens here

Once the subgrade is ready, a layer of crushed stone (angular aggregate, such as 3/4 inch minus or #57 stone) is spread uniformly across the entire area. This layer forms the primary structural base for the hardscape. The video emphasizes the importance of compacting this stone. Although the individual stones themselves "don't compact" in the sense of crushing, they consolidate tightly together when vibrated. A vibratory plate compactor is then used to make multiple overlapping passes over the stone layer, effectively locking the aggregate particles together and increasing the density of the base.

Goal: Create a dense, stable, and unmoving aggregate base layer.

Tools and materials

  • Plate Compactor — Compacting the crushed stone layer
  • Rake — Spreading and leveling the crushed stone
  • Screed Boards — Creating a consistently level surface for the aggregate layer
  • Shovel — Spreading and adjusting the crushed stone
  • Crushed Stone/Gravel N/A — Forming the main structural base layer
