I have seen homes where I could put my entire hand through the hole that moisture rotted out.

What happens here

With the new separation barrier in place and any necessary repairs to the house completed, the next step is to backfill the area. Add fresh, well-draining patio base material (like compacted gravel or crushed stone, often called "grade 8 base material" in the video's context) behind the new barrier. Compact the base material in layers (e.g., 2-4 inch lifts) using a hand tamper or plate compactor to ensure a stable and level surface for the patio. Ensure that the finished grade of the patio slopes away from the house for effective water drainage. Once the base is prepared, the patio surface (pavers, concrete slab, etc.) can be reinstalled or completed according to its original design or an updated plan.

Goal: Complete the patio restoration with proper drainage away from the house.

Tools and materials

  • Level — Checking the slope and level of the patio base
  • New patio base material — Filling the area behind the new barrier
  • Rake — Leveling and grading the base material
  • Shovel — Moving and spreading base material
