How to Build a Patio - An easy Do it Yourself Project

What happens here

The third and final base element is the sand or screed base. The critical measurement for this layer is exactly 1 inch. Sand has no cohesive material, meaning it has the potential to move. If a paver is subjected to pinpoint pressure on its edge, it can push down, causing the opposite end to lift. To achieve the precise 1-inch depth, lay down 1-inch pipes as screed rails and use a screed board to level the sand. This ensures an even surface and prevents paver tipping.

Goal: Create a perfectly level and precisely 1-inch thick sand bedding layer

Tools and materials

  • 1-inch Pipe — Acting as screed rails for leveling the sand
  • Sand — Creating the bedding layer for pavers
  • Screed Board — Leveling the sand layer across the screed rails
  • Wheelbarrow True Temper — Transporting sand and other materials
