(13,010 characters)[Music] what you're gonna find as a TLB and now this is my personal opinion from running them for 28 plus years I started with one of these so I know this intimately the TLB is kind of like the worst of all worlds [Applause] this [Applause] in position let's go in [Applause] right Alex we're gonna get into loading position okay when you drive in one of these down the road there's a certain way you kind of want it because that stinger you got to have a position it doesn't have to be just right but I'm gonna show you the wrong way to drive down the road and then everywhere every everything that's not the wrong ways [Music] how about a tractor no all right perfect by the time we're done today Alex we're gonna teach you how to run the tlb tractor loader backhoe that's what TOB stands for but we're also going to actually have you go out on a real job site and we're gonna have you do a test dig we're gonna have you dig and we're we're gonna have you dig with an old-timer who's a soil testing engineer and we're not gonna tell them that you're a new operator we're gonna see if he picks up on it or not so this will be an interesting one but that'll be tomorrow today we're gonna start with the basics the fundamentals so before we even hop in the loader let's go around it and identify the basic components so the thing about a tractor loader backhoe is I don't want you to see you're a skilled skid steer operator right I don't want you to confuse how a tractor loader backhoe operates and functions with a skid loader what you're gonna find as a TLB and now this is my personal opinion from running them for 28 plus years I started with one of these so I know this intimately that a TLB is kind of like the worst of all worlds all right so I say this because a TLB will not grade attract your little back it will not even come close to grading like a skid loader you're gonna get frustrated if you try to do with it a TLB has a great bucket for picking stuff up loading it and doing a very basic operation like a skid loader and then the back part the excavator part see my excavator over there will not even come close to doing anything that even a small excavator will do it so it's like I said it's almost like the worst of both worlds so I don't want you to pop in it and think that you're going to be hyper efficient in the TLB because they make these over and over again because there is a time and a place for them so let's identify the major component I called this back part the stinger the boom arm the excavator the front is the key for stabilization with a TLB in conjunction with the front bucket okay so I don't want you to ever go in and start to dig with your outriggers in the up position always down always down and you actually want to have them down enough that you can actually lift the machine slightly off the ground you don't want to jack it up in the air like you're trying to change a tire or crawl underneath it and you know get out of the Sun or something you just want it down enough that the machine slightly lifts off the ground that's when you know you're stable now you can dig on some fairly uneven surfaces with the tlb because your outriggers will stabilize you and level you out so the very first step before we do anything is we've got to check the oil I mean we can't start and check the oil check the tires we haven't ran this thing in well crap since last fall so we've got two it might be interesting to see if she'll fire up so on the john deere 310 ii we have an access door on the side sometime your oil check will be on the top every every machine is gonna be totally different but you just want to check it make sure your oil is in decent shape how was it a little dark it's like there's enough in there okay so step one now typically when we shut a machine down we always use the battery disconnect so that's the other thing that if you guys if you ever hop in any of our equipment well I probably shouldn't say this on camera but now you guys know I know you know we always kill the batteries that way they stay they stay fresh so the batteries might be killed on this one the disconnect might be activated but we'll find out that are you ready to hop in the seat so guys you guys have seen Alex in our videos before Alex he got nicknamed thanks Watson dick guys here's the story about Alex that you guys may or may not know and you guys got to come up with a nickname Alex broke his wrist and I went out to his site he's mowing with one hand he's got his other hand in his pocket like this right and I'm watching him and it's not affecting his performance and he never mentioned to anything so I didn't assume anything was wrong later on I found out he snapped his wrist in what two places or something like that on his way into work and he worked all day long with his hand in his pocket so nobody would notice and another time he his truck broke down and so he didn't show up late he rode his bike into work so you guys now that you know him and you've seen him in a few other videos give him a nickname all right so let's um let's get you familiar with the seat so this is the operators seat and a TLB will swing 360 degrees or 180 or whatever it'll do that right so when you're in this position this is your loader position but you've always got to be conscious of your stinger in the back okay because that thing well has taken out more obstacles dinged up more cars just done more damage to guys out in the field than anything else because they're very fully conscious of what's going on in front of them but not behind them and they forget about that big thing in the back so especially for snow removal this year if you hop in that thing you're gonna be hyper conscious of it so that's one of the things just to be aware of okay TLB runs a lot like any other tractor and for guys that are familiar with tractors it runs a lot like a car okay so let's just all hop behind you and then we can take a look at this you don't have to lean forward I got plenty of room back here okay so now in this unit all units all TL B's will be a little bit different but the functioning will be very similar first off let's start at the ground and work our way up you see those brake pedals down there so you've got multiple brake pedals but so they've they're connected right now you flip them over now you got what now you can steer with your rear tires so when you really get in a bind and you really got a turn sharp it's almost like a skid loader at that point if you wanted to turn take a left driving forward your goal pedal has got the big rabbit on it right over there forward and reverse are right here on this unit okay now these have anywhere from three to five speeds depending on what TLB you're in actually I've never been in one that has three speeds four speeds - five speeds this one I believe is a four speed right here okay so this is your ship so you know you can't start out just like anytime you use anything that has a gearshift you can't start out in fourth gear you've got to start out in first and you've got to shift your way up every time that you you know up you get to the right speed sir clutch then the clutch disconnect you can see it right here the button on there is the button right on the side yep so that's how you disconnect the clutch in this one other our other loader will be different now our other TLB has an extended boom on the hole this one does not okay so okay so let's look at the basic control panel for this unit right here so here's your parking brake you've got your main instrument cluster right here but here's something that's a little different and this is your throttle okay so you've got two throttles in the TLB this throttle will just set it to whatever idle you want and this is the throttle you typically use when you're digging with the stinger in the back okay okay the foot throttle you'll throw this all the way down if you just drive them down the road and then you use your foot throttle just like you would a car or a truck or whatever you're familiar with so now as you spin around you want to lock your seat in place there you go you feel it lock in place so now this is your dedicated digging molar and TOB so this is where you know you're gonna get two modes you're gonna be able to switch the control pattern for your digging boom out boom in side-to-side there's you know a lot of guys like I learned on a TLB so that's the old-school control method got a lot of guys are cat operators and they're used to more familiar controls so they'll have to switch them around so if you ever hop in one of these things and the controls feel weird it's low well it may just have the wrong control pattern it's something for you to think about so let's fire it up and let's uh let's get it in digging position I made a mistake right there Alex when you first start your TLB up you should be in the forward-facing I made a mistake the reason you want to be in a forward-facing position you're going to go into digging boat you wanna [ __ ] it up let your bucket out it doesn't matter if you do a point at a time or not typically you can do a note at the same time you're on uneven ground you always wanted tipped sideways like this you want to put that out there your dog seen it before you put that the ice hillside especially a excessively [Applause] this is so compared to other things that you've operated now as your outriggers are down you want to use your sense of balance to make sure that you're perfectly level with y'all [Applause] let's go into a bad day [Applause] so what we're going to show you is what I call an overly aggressive position and the reason I don't recommend it is because it raises your center of gravity [Applause] so this is me [Applause] bad scenario so I'm going to jump in here with a big red flag so now this is the stage where it's gonna take a little bit of muscle memory but I want to caution you that sometimes the bucket can actually scoop all the way into the boom arm so be very careful while you're first getting familiar with the controls now back to your regularly scheduled program boom controls up down in out the left stick go ahead just got to get used to and [Applause] the next thing we're doing into the road and I'm our site alex is gonna be in the TLB let's get in to Road roading position I honestly don't know what you call it I'm just gonna call it loading position all right Alex we're going to get into roading position okay so when you drive in one of these down the road there's a certain way you kind of want it so because that stinger you got to have a position it doesn't have to be just right but I'm going to show you the wrong way to drive down the road and then everywhere and everything that's not the wrong way is probably okay I'm gonna jump in here because you see how he's leaning over the seat operating the boom control guys do that to dig and that can get them in trouble [Applause] so you noticed how squirrely it it is isn't it pretty squirrely all TL B's are super squirrely when you're driving down the road if you get it you know you start to get some speed up it just it and then all of a sudden kind of just starts going and then it kind of gets away from you doesn't it yeah it's hard to stop yeah so when you guys are driving down the road just be conscious of that because that's just fairly typical 40 lbs maybe not a hundred percent of them but all the ones that I've ever driven gets squirrelly because all that weight in the back end from the stinger they the boom arm in the back that front end just starts going in faster you go the faster it can get too early onions alright we made it so now when we park them we park them a certain way TL B's okay so when we park them I always put both boom arms down so they're just touching the ground the machine's not off the ground but both of your outriggers are down and then the bucket is down flat and not holding water and the reason we do that is because if you park it for a long period of time it'll hold water and it's just you know what happens then so outriggers got to go down just to the point where they touch the ground boom we don't want it lift in the machine off the ground that's it [Applause] and your front buckets already down close your windows make sure your key is off and put away and then we'll we'll shut off the battery disconnect and then we're good to go so that's the basic control function we're gonna go out to a job site and we're gonna take it from there in the next video all right guys we're at the site and Alex is actually never dug with the back off we've got the soil engineer we've got the Builder potential buyer and developer here all watching him and the same time this is gonna be awesome we're gonna see him everything that we taught him down in the yard translates the actual skills out in the field don't know if it is or not but what the heck let's have a little bit of fun right let's get into it
