(13,846 characters)do not if you're average or mediocre at something don't worry about becoming the best at it right find something that drives Your Heart and Soul Your Passion like it makes you burn inside okay because what's going to happen is you're going to be able to master that that much faster right right and you need to master every element of that from when the phone first rings to when you go to the customer's house to when you close that job you have mastered every component of it so when the phone rings let's take of pool demolition so when the phone first rings and a customer says hey I got a pool I need removed what do I do I would say hey you know what this is what we do here's our process and it would immediately put them into what I call a sales funnel so I already knew what I was going to say I had my sales pitch I had practiced it I had refined it no and I had used other contractors that did crappy jobs to sell my work for me so I would take real life stories things that I had seen actually happened in the field where contractors came in and they didn't demolish the swimming pool they didn't remove the whole thing they just collapsed it all in and pushed it all in in fact Well story that I would like to do I would put a little tiny scare factor into my customers I don't recommend you guys doing it or you doing it but I did it I would say God I remember there was this one contractor I did every single job for you know you call me up for a pool demolition Mr Mrs Johnson I you know we do pool demolitions here's our process we remove everything we get all the per we use a mini excavator we use a skid loader nothing is Left Behind we put the soil in place we compact it we use structural fill soil we put it in 8 to 10 in lifts as we're we're building up your bottom of your swimming pool when we get closer to the top we stop the compaction process unless you're going to be putting in a patio or another structure if you're going to be putting in a lawn we want you to be able to grow a nice green fertile lawn we import one load of of uh pulverized black dirt this is my what I would actually how I would talk to you if you were my customer they would ask a few questions and I says now I do recomend you going out and get another quot but just be careful of of who you get make sure they understand the process I there a great example of real life happened to me is I worked with this contractor and he did Land Development and I did all of his roads I did all of his houses I've dug his basements and he called me up and he had a house that he needed removed it was in Egan Minnesota he had a swimming pool behind it that needed to be removed and I gave him a quote and he didn't hire me now this was the first job he had never hired me for and I made that look on my face I'm like well I don't know what happened but I was a busy busy boy I was young right right right went on my way 3 months later I got the phone call Stan and I'm like yeah what did you do and I'm like oh what did I do cuz i' done all of it work at a road collapse and a wall all over to a basement going right right like you didn't pull a permit on that swimming pool mhm I'm like what you didn't pull a permit on the swimming pool you pushed everything in you buried everything now the city has shut down seven of my houses until you get out here and you fix the mess you made and I said you remember that's the one job you didn't hire me for yeah and I would share that story with my customers because that's what our competition is doing throw them under the bus you are a wolf you are the leader of the pack don't be afraid to be the leader of the pack absolutely you have to differ apprciate yourself and that means you you share your process how it's better and you can share stories of what other people are doing you're not going to call anybody out I'm never going to say Gavin your last name you did this he lives here this is what he did he's a horrible person I'm never going to say that but I'm going to share the story in general of what people are doing does that make sense Gavin makes complete sense there you go all right next question next question well um so how did you get to the point where you are now did you have a mentor when you were younger were was your family in the industry um how did you get to right here right now um so how did you get to the point where you are now did you have a mentor when you were younger were was your family in the industry um how did you get to right here right now my dad your dad okay my dad now uh I understand you your dad's facing some health issues God bless him I hope you guys are awesome and epic and everything is good and you guys may not have a dad that does this for you or a family or an uncle or anybody um and that's why I make these videos yeah because not everybody has a dad that will push them to the point where they are miserable they're bitter but they're also appreciative my dad would wake me up at 400 a.m. since I was four years old he was a crop duster gabin and he'd say we're going out we're going to go we're you know he we would go out to the airport and I'd spend all day long with them you know out farming out working out doing everything so he ingrained into me a work ethic but he didn't know anything about this so when you see all this equipment he knew nothing about that but he installed a uh he installed the confidence he installed enough confidence in me that I believed I could do anything mhm right right right and here's the thing when you're young like you are you can do absolutely anything and don't get near him he's got Co so you can and you can do absolutely anything c yeah anything is absolutely possible because I have two arms I have two legs I have a mouth two eyes there's zero difference between you and me took me six years to get get a 2-year degree I'm not the brightest ballb in the bunch I've never claimed to be mhm but I will work harder than anybody I've ever met in my life there's only two people I know that work as hard as I do Frankie and that freak over there right there those are the only two people that I've ever met and Tim is pretty damn close right so I will say I will outwork everyone what's up Co boy going on yeah he keep your distance yeah he doesn't have to come in to work I asked him not to come in to work I don't want to be down window you now and there he is there guess what he's doing he's working I was just telling Gavin Alex this is Gavin Gavin Alex you too he asked me what how I got to this point here and I said I got to this point here Alex by outworking everybody I ever met not by out but not by being smarter than them cuz I'm not I will outthink everybody I know but it takes me longer takes me more time to figure it out right there's no secret to this but I will put in the hours and the only other two people that I've ever met who's the hardest working person you ever met in your life Tim oh okay he's my third hardest working who's number one Frankie yes Frankie he will outwork everybody you just got I was thinking about Frankie I thought maybe who we work with every day but yeah yeah Frankie Frankie is a beast man Frankie Tim you me we are the absolute hardest working people I've ever met and the second secret to your success Gavin is is by surrounding yourself with people like that and he's going to be my new business partner oh really yes that's awesome he is being accepted in as a partner because when you find a person that has that potential no matter what you don't let them Escape right because they will grow they don't need you they don't need me they don't need us so team up with them leverage them find people that are smarter than you find people that are as driven as you hire them bring them on but they don't have to have experience gav yeah because a lot of times experience comes with preconceived notions of how things have to be done and here's the difference there is no one way to do anything that is just absolutely right and there is no wrong way to do anything there's just different ways to get to the same point right right right and how you do it you've got to see people that match up with your same drive your same end goals yeah but are willing to sacrifice and work as hard as you do right right yeah and your one way might be different than mine but we found what works best for each other you know for one way works best for me and one way works best for you 100% that's how it works 100% so your team all right so here's the other thing that I wanted to say to you the thing I've had the blessing to be go be able to go behind the scenes of a lot of very highly successful SCH over here so we can get not look into the Suns I've had the blessing to be go behind the scenes of a lot of super highly successful businesses 60 plus million doll companies I'm talking about right and they don't they're not related there's not like oh these guys know These Guys these guys know these guys uncom completely related Industries completely unrelated in everything they do right but they all have one thing in common every Super highly successful business has one thing in common and that is a team they all build a phenomenal network of people people first people number one M then your processes then it's about how you operate your business how you how you from the when the phone rings to how you do your jobs to how you invoice to how you allocate for your own overhead how you do job costing all of these things together then end up with your final product and your final product is the last thing you worry about because your people and your processes create your final product for you does that make sense makes complete sense that is I love how you worded that completely okay yeah and it's the two pizza roll gabin right well that leads I mean this this is perfect it leads to the next question okay how did you you know you're talking about how you found this great guy right here Y what do you look for when you're hiring heart employees heart team members heart it it's heart hey do you remember one of the first times you came to work which time austa Shores you were working at austa Shores and here's this friard with his hand in his pocket like this Mowing and I'm like does this realize I'm paying for both of his hands to be working right and he's out there he's got one hand on mower Gavin right here hold the camera for me all right so he's got one hand in his pocket one hand on the m and he's mowing and he's mowing and I'd never known Alex before this right and I'm looking at him like what the hell is wrong with this kid you want to say you want to explain what happened that day yeah I just had a hurt wrist he broke your hand he broke his hand on his way into work wow determination right there and he came in to work and I'm just like I'm going to keep an eye on him so that was the first thing if you have that kind of dedication it's it's the little things right and then he came into work we were plowing he came into work he was sick another thing that set him apart was he yanked out he wrecked a piece of equipment remember the trailer hitch you wrecked on me you pulled out my snowplow hitch uh before I disconnected it and just drove away from it and the plugs went yes snapped yeah and what did you do I went out and replaced it did anybody ask you to replace it no and I use my own money too to replace it would you keep that guy on I would keep him and I would give him a good raise too damn right you would do that make sure I I do anything to keep person like that it's not the big things it's the tiny tiny things that you as a boss your job as a boss is to recognize Superior character right right and it's not a superior experience Gavin mhm it's the character of a person because the character of a person is going to add up long term because they all gain experience right right two years you're going to be phenomenal I appreciate that in two years you're going to be phenomenal if you're dedicated motivated if you're driven enough here's the thing let's step away from him while he backs away here's the thing you remind me a lot of uh G&M Outdoor Services Garrett Molina and jam I love that guy I watch him all the time Garrett love you man if you're watching gar and Jameson came to my house when they were about your age and did exactly what you did knocked on my door and said hey can we talk to you yeah and I says n can you talk to me here's a free hat come inside let's hang out for a while what do you need to know yeah and now they're running their business is bigger than my business it is it's a bigger business I mean hey they're why because they have three people a strong Trio they're like a they're like a stool right they all depend on each other yeah they've got the team they're driven they're motivated and there's no limits to their world at this point yeah right mhm so for you like I said you you will get experience yeah in two or three years you're going to know how to run equipment you're going to know how to do all of this if I hired you now I would just grow you into those positions knowing you may not be worth tits on a boore hog at this point yeah but in years to come you are going to be absolutely fundamental to my company yeah absolutely you as a business owner have to look for potential in your people that's the hugest thing that I can tell you okay don't look for experience look for potential MH yeah that kind of runs to the question of um you know how do you uh keep and retain employees you know so that you got to find so it sounds like you got to find you know the great parts of them what they're really good at and keep put them in that uh particular area good question God this kid's got good questions I have so many questions I don't
