How a solar well works on a farm...off grid water!

What happens here

Another type of water storage implemented is a 650-gallon tire water tank, created from an old skidder tire. The tire was thoroughly scrubbed and then a concrete base was poured into its center to create a water reservoir. A float valve (Jobi MegaFlow Valve) is installed inside to automatically fill the tank. Three pieces of PVC pipe and conduit are placed across the top of the tire to prevent young calves from jumping into the water and potentially drowning if the water level gets low. Goldfish are added to the tank to help keep it clean. This tank also serves as gravity-fed storage for other waterers located further down the hill. In extremely cold weather, this tank may freeze on the surface, but its large volume prevents it from freezing solid.

Goal: Create an additional, durable water storage solution from recycled materials

Tools and materials

  • Concrete — Creating a solid base for the water tank
  • Float Valve Jobi MegaFlow Valve — Automatically refilling the water tank as water is consumed
  • PVC Pipe/Conduit — Creating a safety barrier for calves
  • Skidder Tire — The main structure of the water tank
  • Goldfish — Keeping the water clean from algae and mosquito larvae
