painting and opened up a tanning business uh we're I'm my tanning video is still in in the making yeah yeah I'm pretty white so I'd be a good specimen but no so we got Greg Hill from Tempe Arizona um I use bear good and cheap I love your hat Chris Daniel roses um is in the house Javier Beltran so I think we got we got 90 people on now so we'll start talking about um why are we talking about fences and decks right now so here at Idaho it's finally good weather for decks and fences and the temperatures outside that are about in the 80 degrees and stuff so it's um it's absolutely beautiful and now we don't have a whole lot of chance for rain and stuff so um it's time to start power washing and prepping decks and fences and we'll just start off with you know it's uh some fences and we've got somebody from San Jacinto that's where I grew up San Jacinto California grew up on the whole family there both of us still got family and Hammond and Sam just you know but um so fences I'll start off just you know um a fence I've got videos on how I go about power washing fences but we start off up here all the fences you see all of them and I get a lot of criticism with people you know tearing me apart about the rotating nozzle I use when power washing fences and I think a lot of people don't understand the type of fences we have up here but all the fences are rough sawn Cedar so when you go buy the material it's extremely rough and so we use a mighty and rotating nozzle with our power washer and we the the fence is typically when we're dealing with them they're all gray black ugly or got um even some why are they black or gray they mildew the black and gray is caused by mildew and and so we take and we strip them and when we're done stripping them that rotating nozzle it kind of it it tears away at the wood and then leaves that fence uh looking brand new again down to bare wood or clean wood and and it leaves that roughs on look so obviously if I was doing a smooth cedar fence I wouldn't be using that nozzle so I think a lot a lot of people don't realize the type of fences we're dealing with up here but they're all roughs on Cedar and those rotating nozzles with enough pressure just it's incredible how good they make the fences look and and then we begin the staining process and we typically use water-based stains so um hopefully you're watching first if anybody got some questions you can let me know well I think the big thing is is we want to know um what products you like to use for staining do like semi-transparent transparent solid oil water and what do you use and why and when what determines that so see um so we got separate is our best stain Brands except mesmers um I've used mesmers and I think mesmers is an awesome product it's an oil-based product but typically nowadays it's very rare that we use anything um uh that's oil-based anymore and the main reason is it's just really messy there's a lot of liability with oils because they don't dry very fast and carrying in the air and getting on the neighbors you know plants and neighbors house cars they're really light and so when you spray an oil there's just a super a big liability and then the smell of the oils are just obnoxious and I just can't actually stop cleaning dealing with them the cleanup is extremely difficult you got to use typically mineral spirits are paint thinner to clean up with and then there's a lot of um liability with that killing grass and killing plants and stuff spilling it and and nowadays the technology and water-based products is just I believe Superior to oil-based products so when would you use oil is there a time when you would on a fence I I think a good time to use an oil-based product possibly you know if you've got a brand new fence or deck the oils are um you know they they look really good and um and you know the oil oil-based products also do penetrate the wood and actually add something to the wood and help the wood last longer help keeping it from splitting and checking and cracking and stuff but just the water-based Technologies now they're uh the we use a product from Sherwin that's a polyurethanized product and the woodscapes products and for fences is what we use in their water basin and I've uh right here in my subdivision we painted or I say paint but it's actually stained a solid color stain uh some previous painters made a mess of it and painted it and peeled and it was it was a gigantic fence going around the whole neighborhood and stuff and we power washed it stripped it and then restained it and typically your fences you know two to three years up here and they're looking pretty bad and got to be recoded but we used a water-based product and I think how long how many years is it now four years they know they're gonna have to tear the fence down but instead we did that I think it's been like five or six years five or six years given so much more life than anything and it still um looks it still looks good it's starting to get to the point where it probably needs to be redone but that's that's quite a bit the time so it though I just I really like the water-based products so much easier to use so much easier to clean up and then they dry if you're spraying with an airless sprayer when on a nice warm day the the mist and the over spray goes up in the air and it flash drives really fast and I never had any over spray get on anybody's property anybody's cars fences houses or anything so I've never had a liability claim you know from that so um what was that TWP oil um so we got all clean pressure cleaning service ready seal and TWP oil I've never heard of that um that's probably it's not a product around here that I've ever seen George EPC Penofin so we got George EPC wrote on here Penofin Penofin is probably I believe it's the best oil-based semi-transparent stain there is on the market I used it for years and years and they used to sell at Home Depot and some other places but now here in my area in Idaho you can't get there's only one place that sells it as a pool a pool store and they only have like several gallons of it and but it's a it's absolutely amazing product but um and mesmers is kind of equivalent but man when you spray that stuff it's nasty and it gets on your skin it burns and Matt it burns your eyes and I just it's oh gosh I didn't like using it but it it really is good you said any gray stain recommendations from Blake um so as you see Blake solid color stain did you see Blake on here somewhere Super Deck solid 96 Super Deck solid 9600 Emulsion I use it on tracks that's um yeah Super Deck is a really really good product um so did you let's see Dave Evans what's up guys um rower painting Columbus Ohio from Dave thanks for being with us tonight thanks for being with us um we got another person Jamie tesser George said I like oil on mahogany wood floors um so yeah uh so the mahogany went far I'm not sure I'm George if he's talking about um wood floors inside or is that outside um on a deck man I've never I've never seen a deck on done with mahogany that'd be one expensive deck not in Idaho um Blake says any Gray State oh let's see Blake Courier any gray stain recommendations uh is that semi-transparent stain or is that solid color stain um you know I don't if you're are you talking about you know uh what color a new gray is a really good gray um that's a Sherwin-Williams color a new gray um uh the Grays are what are really in what's trendy right now Grays and whites so the family man um in 7 30 we're gonna be doing this live raffle and then at the end of the show tonight we're going to be doing another giveaway so yeah we're gonna be doing another giveaway at the end of the show and this one what about the Facebook photo uh the Facebook photo um we're gonna be doing a giveaway next live show all you got to do is go to my Facebook page and um post a picture of a deck or fence that you've done recently and we're gonna select somebody off um with one of their photos and we're gonna give them a giveaway next week on our Facebook page and we'd love to hear like why you posted that picture is it something you liked doing did it turn out really well do you have before and after pictures we love that so I got um Aaron G he any special tip size to spray water-based stain so when I'm when I'm and we're talking we're talking about fences right now we'll get I'll get the decks here um pretty quick I'll talk a little bit about deck so we got the power washing process done and one of the nice things about um water-based stains too is you don't have to let the fence dry for multiple days like an oil-based product you have to the fence has to be completely dry if it's still wet it's oil and so there's going to be a problem with the penetration of the oil a water-based stain you actually what I've noticed in doing it myself is you get a better penetration and you don't have the stuff dry in so fast you're able to back brush it if the fence is still slightly moist and so you can power wash the fence early in the morning and come back the same day and and stay in the fence with a water-based product or stain it the next day we typically sometimes we do them the same day and um mostly the next day but what it does is it gives you a little bit more working time you know to back brush and I use a 515 tip when we're spraying fences because I want to get tons of product on there and this is the difference between a professional and a do-it-yourselfer who's just using a weed sprayer or um just a pump spray or something like that applying the product is when we're spraying it on we typically are using two to three times more than a do-it-yourselfer and I want a good heavy tip the guy's spraying and I got videos showing our process how we go about doing it and I'm just and we're spraying and the person's going really really slow just absolutely saturating the wood and then in order for your fence to last a long time like the one here in my neighborhood five six years you've gotta somebody's got to be back brushing it to push it down into the pores of that fence and and get it to really penetrate deeply so at the guy back brushing is too far behind than the the stain is going to be dry before he even gets there because it dries really fast and so it's got to be just sopping wet for him to back brush it and and get that the penetrate have you done any fences lately that you want to share or show pictures yeah I got um where's the I'll show you a picture this is a pretty complicated fence that we were doing right here um I don't know can they find it on Instagram if they wanted to go there yeah if you go um you can see that right there this fence um John my supervisor was working on that fence and that was probably the hardest fence we ever stained and it had because we couldn't get our um it's white on the op the neighbor opposite neighbors um fence was white and the neighbor was absolutely adamant we don't get any stain on her white side of her fence and what a nightmare so it all had to be you know hand done on those those um basically the pickets and stuff but that was a really difficult there was a solid color stain a color called Ember is what that was if you're curious what color it was um yeah so it's on Instagram I'm on Instagram it's crazy I got I posted a video so I'm now I'm starting to do this um while we're working during the day posting little 30 second like tips and Snippets of um us painting and trying to give you some tips that you won't find on my YouTube channel but I did this video the other day on Instagram and um my wife actually shot it of me shooting gutters so you can see how I go about spraying gutters with multiple extensions and the video just a couple days ago it's got over 14 000 views now crazy 14 000 views and I think I've gotten like 500 followers well we're gonna we're gonna learn how to use better and make a hashtag Idaho painter because we want everybody to share what they're doing their successes their failures and for us to learn from each other cool let's see how do you let's see how do I get a chance at the raffle so um that's why the the um if you you still got time if you haven't entered the into the spare my giveaways are all on my webpage the Idaho painter.com I give away there's a lot of products given away there's only like 12 minutes if you go go there you're gonna see one of the tabs says giveaways and you just go right down there and you're gonna have to hurry up and into into the giveaway there but that's all my giveaways are there so even if you missed that there's a bunch of other stuff to give away see Josh R your Instagram is great that you provide color codes oh yep thank you we got Josh school he's been watching me on Instagram Zach Rollins will do um Rich Murray hey Chris what app do you use to put those color swatches on yours yeah so that app that if you guys follow me on Instagram it's really cool and I just learned about it um from uh John Cole my supervisor showed it to me and he shows teaches me so much is amazing so I just learned it a couple weeks ago from John and it's really cool so it's called Swatch deck and um the Swatch deck it has every single paint manufactured out there and you can enter in the color name or color code and it brings up this thing and you gotta it takes some time to learn the app it took me a little bit of time to figure it out but then I used that in conjunction with Photoshop to add the photo to it and stuff but it's really cool but it's a really cool app he showed me that one and then there was another app that John showed me that is really cool too and it's a good one for painters it's called slack and go check that out slack does anybody want to tell us about like do they like doing fences does anybody specialize in that or what products I see people talking about Benjamin Moore Arbor coat uh you've used that a Benjamin Moore Arbor code um is is yeah I think Benjamin Moore Arbor code is the best solid color stain product I've ever used in my career absolutely amazing stuff I love that stuff I did a whole house and um with black we did it stained it with uh Black from Arbor code absolutely amazing all their trim and stuff was solid color black and I love that stuff the stuff I use for my local paint store um because the the Benjamin Moore store here is just a local store that's like I think I talked about it before where it's not one of the corporate stores it's a privately owned store in the van it's not yeah they don't cater to contractors and they don't have enough product and they're super duper expensive Benjamin Moore please get a store up here that'd be really nice if they did um let's see Ryan Pence pets hold Instagram is the fastest way to go to your business in regards to social media right now faster to grow I think it's what he meant to grow yeah uh that gets a little bit into the marketing things of painting if you own just any business man you've got to be on social media uh pen uh Instagram and Pinterest are ways to grow your business fast along with Facebook too well especially Pinterest because people are looking for colors and if you're a local pink company and you are posting your work on there and people are like what's the trending colors and they find you yeah I think it works out so we got David Evans says the app is tricky I'm sure he's probably it's um it takes a little bit to learn to use so I um I you know spent I was sitting here on at my desk when John showed it to me and it took me you know by two three hours to figure out how to use it and integrate it with Photoshop to you know get it to you know work with the photo and everything but once you learn how to use it it's awesome I'll have to like make a tutorial on how to use it and I'll post it on my website Aristo Shield so uh doc I'm not sure what that is one two six three um Aristo Shield I've never used it I mean who sells it and who makes it I'm kind of curious um we got a super chat from Mel C let's see…
