What happens here
Although not fully shown in the video, the initial step for a successful paving project involves preparing the sub-base, laying down a compacted layer of granular material (like compacted gravel), and then installing parallel guide rails. These rails, often PVC pipes or aluminum screed rails, are placed at the exact desired finished height of the paver base, serving as guides for the screeding tool. The granular bedding material (e.g., bedding sand or fine crushed stone) is then loosely spread between these rails, ensuring it's slightly higher than the top of the rails to allow for proper leveling.
Goal: Establish a stable foundation and set the desired grade for the granular base
Tools and materials
- Guide Rails — Providing a reference height and path for the screeding tool
- Hand Tamper — Compacting the sub-base layer
- Level — Ensuring guide rails are perfectly level or at the correct slope
- Measuring Tape — Measuring rail placement and depth
- Shovel — Spreading granular bedding material
- Granular Bedding Material — Creating the final level base for pavers
