What happens here
The video demonstrates how the Geo-grid is integrated into the retaining wall. It is 'sandwiched' in between subsequent courses (layers) of the retaining wall blocks. From there, the Geo-grid rolls out into the drainage backfill area. As more gravel backfill is added, it is compacted, which effectively locks the Geo-grid into place. This compaction causes the wall to become structurally 'one' with the material it is retaining, greatly increasing its strength and preventing movement.
Goal: Understand the functional placement and role of Geo-grid as a tie-back.
Tools and materials
- Compaction Equipment — Compacting the gravel backfill to lock the Geo-grid in place
- Drainage Backfill — Providing a base and fill material for Geo-grid compaction
- Excavator/Mini-excavator Takuechi — Moving and spreading backfill material during construction
- Geo-grid Various manufacturers — Providing structural reinforcement and acting as a tie-back
- Retaining Wall Blocks — Constructing the face of the retaining wall
